No. That wasn't the factory that was a lack of communication and professionalism. I'm not sure Peter quite realizes how quickly the tides can turn for a business's reputation, especially one that just started. I would've taken the refund and bought from somewhere else. Yes, they are at the mercy of the factory but they are in full control of communication.

87 days and STILL counting. No frame yet. Was told 60-65. Then a 15-20 day delay due to 2 holidays and a bike show. TIC TOC!!!  >:(  3K gloss better be worth it! I could have had UD matte within a week.

Wow, that is unacceptable. To be given an approximate time and it go 50% past the estimated time (and that 50% just happens to be a whole month) then I'd be done with the seller. And what's up with all of these delays for holidays and bike shows?? First of all.. Holidays? Are you serious? Are you or aren't you trying to build a business? And what sense does it make to put a customer on hold for a bike show? I'm sure the point of the bike show is to grow the business and make connections.. but at the cost of putting a customer on hold? Just doesn't make sense to me.

I'm sorry, I know Peter is kind of the go-to around here, and I guess mods can delete this if they want, and I do think he's done a mostly good job, but that's just silly imo and I'd ask for a refund and order a matte frame from a different supplier. My 2 cents.

Vendor Discussion & Reviews / Any vendors that accept Bitcoin?
« on: June 21, 2015, 03:37:34 PM »
I'm not a huge Bitcoiner or anything, but this is a situation that seems like a no brainer to be able to pay using the digital currency. I think the PayPal fee is something like 4% of transaction? So a thousand dollar order will be an extra $40 in total cost after the fee, and that's before shipping.. Seems if we could eliminate that fee entirely that would just make the whole chiner option even more enticing and affordable. Some online retailers that accept Bitcoin even offer up to like a 5% discount when you choose to pay with Bitcoin.. I think it'd def be awesome to see something like that from a carbon supplier.

Anyways, that just occurred to me and I thought I'd share it.

Are there riders with painted chinese carbon rims?

Not that I know of, really. I got the idea from this thread: http://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,253.0.html

And I totally forgot about this pic in that thread that shows the exact rim color I was thinking of for your bike, except maybe a little darker red tone:

Thanks for the update, and thorough thread. Love the black and red builds. I'm still waiting for someone to buy some carbon chiner rims and have them painted - Matte red rims would look pretty awesome on your bike imo.

I planned a rigid fork, but after Reading about the dt swiss opm odl 100 carbon fork with its insane weight (1470gr incl. axle)

Yes, this fork has me excited too. There's really no reason not to go ahead and get a few inches of suspension up front now, imo. Other than budget constraints, of course.

Great discussion.

This forum is great for answering both these questions from customers that pioneered and tried it. But the negative is that your sales will improve with delay after a new frame is community-tested. Because we don't know anything about the new frame and how it compares to the tested ones (manufacturing process, testing,..).

Interesting. I've never thought about it that way, but you're totally correct.. Sales of a new frame are on a sort of time delay due to potential buyer's hesitations.

Did pretty much the same thing. Went from 711 to 740. Clipped far too many trees and just didn't seem to add much if any benefit for my riding style. Sticking with 711mm handlebars for now.

^^ It's the 057, I believe.

Any update on this? You going to fix it or get it replaced?

So, 29+ is a 29er with 50mm width rims and 3 inch tires, correct?

How much heavier are the wheels compared to an average 29er wheel? How much lighter compared to average fat bike wheels?

After The Ride / The next generation of 3d printing
« on: May 09, 2015, 06:29:49 PM »
Thought you guys might be interested in this article. Doesn't seem too far fetched that in 20 years we could be all 3D printing our own bike frames. Pretty crazy and exciting what technology might be like in the short term future.

http://knowledgeglue.com/this-is-the-stunning-future-of-3d-printing/

It uses lasers to continually weld powdered metals, then uses CNC to finish up the item. The end result is extraordinarily precise and useful.

I'm talking gram per dollar. If you are buying crank bros cause of weight which was mentioned i assumed that was something you were interested in.

Good point.

Hmm, never looked into Ritchey pedals until now. Those WCS Paradigm look like the way to go for SPD style cleats. They get rave reviews, weigh 232 grams (whereas XT weighs 343 and XTR weigh 310, and Eggbeater 3 weighs 290),  and they are quite a bit cheaper than XTR as well. The super light weight initially made me worried about durability but from reading reviews they seem good in that department as well.

I've rocking a plain old set of Shimano spd pedals for a few years now and decided it was time to upgrade. Have been considering something from Crank Brothers but if I stay spd I think I'll definitely try out these Ritcheys.

Some parts are from my Orbea Alma that I am retiring.

The Alma is a carbon frame too, isn't it? Can I ask why you're retiring only to replace it with another carbon frame? Just curious. Nice build, btw. Those wheels are frkn sweet.

After The Ride / Re: Anyone else feel guilty?
« on: May 07, 2015, 10:14:02 AM »
The shops know that I will still need some parts and accessories, so while I'm not a big dollar customer, I'm still a customer.

This is the part that gets me. I don't feel guilty at all. My lbs is always in "pushy sales mode" and any attempt at casual conversation about mtb riding or mtb gear is pointless. Which is fine, run your business however you like, but it blows my mind how so many people in business fail to see the power in building relationships. Whenever I've brought up building my own bike via parts ordered online they pretty much acted like they literally didn't even hear me and kept talking about whatever it was they were trying to sell me. just an overall bad vibe that didn't win me over a s a customer at all. I don't get it. Even if I don't purchase my bike from them, I will most likely spend a few hundred on bike related gear every year after the initial bike purchase. I swear this guy, who was the owner, honestly didn't care either way.

I realize this likely isn't the norm, it just baffles me that there are people like this run and own businesses.
