Feedback on Titanium chains.
« on: November 17, 2016, 02:11:22 AM »
Are titanium chains worth it?  I'm not really after the weight but they do fight rust better than the ordinary chains.  Which is a plus with me as I do tend to forget to clean/lubricate my chains.  Are they more durable or just a weight-weenie thingy?

They cost 3-4 times more locally.

I'd say that if you don't maintain your chain, Ti or not, it won't last long. Rust won't attack it but it will still wear out quickly. I'm a bit of a maniac but I wipe my chain after every ride with a rag (same with RD pulleys, chainrings), then add a minimal amount of Teflon based lubricant.
That said, 3-4x the price of a regular chain is a very good price!

I really need to visit Asia...

No personal experience with titanium chains. However, considering how fast titanium cogs wear out and the fact that chain is the one single part that requires the most frequent replacement, I personally would not even touch one, weight weenie or not .

@seahog, that's what I wanted to hear, Ti's durability against wear and tear. I didn't know Ti cogs wear out fast.

@SG, you should visit Asia... even if it's not the Philippines.

Hi tripleDot,

Thanks for educating me :)
I was curious and searched for Philippines and Asia. It looks like the answer is pretty complex!

@SG, all I can say is, that author is just looking from a tiny crack in a wall when writing that piece.  Don't let one guy's opinions be the basis of how you will look at the Philippines or Asia for thst matter.  It can sound pretty complex but then again what country isn't?
