Rear shock (165x38) to replace a RockShox Monarch RL?
« on: May 31, 2023, 07:25:26 AM »
I am searching for a cheaper alternative to the RockShox Monarch RL rear shock I have now which is due for service. The last time I had it serviced it cost me almost $200 which is almost the cost of a new shock. So this time if I can find a cheaper shock then I'll give it a whirl to save some time and money. I have found one that's almost there at 165x35 but that won't work, right?

This is the frame I have: https://www.aliexpress.com/i/2251832876880763.html?gatewayAdapt=4itemAdapt

Here's the shock I have now: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00V8S8ABE/

Here's one that looks good, but I suspect might be off (35 vs 38): https://www.amazon.com/DNM-Mountain-Shock-Lockout-190mm/dp/B00FLTZ47O

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

You would lose 3mm of trail, which is about 8% of your total going with a 35 stroke, but I don't think it could do any damage.

Are DNM rear shocks any good?

X-Fusion do a 165x38 that is available pretty cheaply on eBay.  I haven't ridden X-Fusion, but they have a solid reputation and are OEM on loads of affordable full-sus bikes.
