Canyon Bikes

They sell direct, complete bikes or framesets and have some impressive looking bikes.  What caught my eye was their Carbon Hardtail 29er with a Rockshox RS-1 (that's the new inverted fork) and DT Swiss Spline wheels for $3,499 Euros.  Not bad considering the fork alone is $1,500 and the wheelset is another $800 on eBay.  Not to mention, the front hub is unique for the RS-1 fork.

The website is nicely laid out the products appear to be high quality and not just run of the mill Chinese carbon frames.

So you don't think these are frames purchased from China and then rebadged/remarketed as being made by Canyon bikes? They certainly make it seem as though they are the manufacturer:

Canyon bike are very nice and good looking bike. My father in law has one. It's really good quality.
I went for a chiner bike, but if I didn't, I definitely go for a canyon bike.
A canyon bike with almost the same specs as my chiner costs almost the same.

Canyon are one of those companies who got an appropriation to buy stuff from China, so they don't have to pay anti-dumping. The other german company Rose does also have that appropriation and you can find many other european bike manufacturers on that long list too.

It's a quite well known company in Europe, very good bung for a buck.

I came here to find information about frames from china, then I do find a thread about my hometown.

I actually live where the headquarter of Canyon Bikes is located at. It's a city called Koblenz in West Germany.
I myself own one of there bikes from 2008. A Canyon Nerve ES 8.0 140/140mm Fully with Fox suspension and full Shimano XT groupset combined with Avid Elixir 7 203/180 breaks.

The bikes have a really really good reputation and you get a lot of bang for your buck.
Nearly every (serious) biker in a 100km radius around Koblenz has at least driven if not owned one of these bikes. :-)

Even at $3,800 USD, I'm not sure I could build a Chiner hard tail with an RS-1 fork and DT Swiss XR1501 wheels for much less than that price.

So to be clear.. They are still chiner frames, right? If that's the case, they are blatantly lying and false advertising.

I would assume the frames are made in either China or Taiwan, as another poster said, they have permission to bring the frames in from Asia without the requirement to pay anti-dumping fees.

I would not agree that they are lying about their business model.  To me the graphic shows the frame comes from a factory, through Canyon Bikes, then sold directly to the consumer.  They cut out the importer/distributor and bike shop to keep the mark up low.  Seems to work as the pricing is much lower than anything you would purchase at a LBS.

With all due respect, and nothing against Canyon, but I have to disagree.. they are indeed lying. Very blatantly, I might add. They are not the manufacturer, and they claim to be.

Canyon is one of the bigger brands in Europe. They might have their frame produced in china/taiwan/whatever, but a lot of big brand do. They sell directly to constumer, thus saving the costs of middlemen. Their frame (raceframes at least) are amond the best in the pro-peleton. They set de bar for TT-bikes en aeroshaped bikes. In the US they are not that well know, but I think that will only be a matter of time.

The "direct to consumer" businesses are starting to come up.

YT is doing that in the US. They sell direct to the consumer with the middle man.

Their aluminum Capra model with a Pike, X9 drivetrain, and some pretty decent components sells for 3k. For an extra 200 you get the SRAM X1 drivetrain. Its one bike that I would literally buy and ride. You will not get that level of bike with any of the big box manufactures. From Specialized, the cheapest bike with a Pike is an aluminum hardtail at 3200.

Interesting that YT bikes has no XC oriented models, just bikes with big travel.
