Someone in the thread wrote that the rear hub/freewheel sound is quite loud - with the "own hub system" that supports carbon spokes.

Peter told me that if I want to go with carbon spokes I will have to got with their own hub system - DT Swiss, Novatec, Extralite won't work.

Wouldn't worry about it, it's not offensive.
People only get annoyed because they can hear I'm freewheeling when they have to pedal

Hi all,

short feedback on my wheels received from Peter a couple of weeks ago and mounted on a Tarmac SL7.

They are 50mm front / 60mm rear (D50CU-31 and D60CU-31), 54t ratchet, 3.8mm carbon spokes, 20/20H, UD paintless, rim 24mm inner/31mm outer so perfect for 28mm tyres. With this rim, my 28mm tyres have 30mm width.

One of my requirements when getting those was not to loose in comfort vs my previous 50mm wheels with metal spokes, as well as good cross-winds stability (Peter recommended 3.8mm spokes for that purpose).

Upon receiving them, I started regretting that I did not get Sapim CX-Ray spokes and 36T ratchet (for long-term usage - I spent too much time documenting myself  ), but after having rode them on 2 occasions, I am really happy with my choice:

- I did not loose in comfort with the carbon spokes and higher rim profile
- I see many people say that 36T ratchet is very suited for road use, but I actually find the 54t really nice to ride....it makes for a very comfortable ride, i.e. when re-starting to pedal, the transition to the hub "biting" is very smooth, I really like it

Aside from the ratchet and from not losing in comfort, the main difference I can feel is the acceleration vs my previous 1590gr wheels. These feel like they respond right away.

But otherwise, I'll be honest and say that I did not feel huge differences....but when checking my Strava, the data tells me otherwise ! I'm not in great shape currently, yet I'm having the same top speed and average power than during the season....I can't wait to get even more acquainted with those wheels !

I got a set of wheels with 54t ratchet, and to be honest, the volume is much lower than I expected....54t makes a higher-pitch noise compared to 36t.

Also, you can influence the volume of the noise by adding or removing grease....so I would not worry about the noise level on XM Carbon Speed wheels...

Any thoughts on the 21/21H hubs with the side entry spokes? Anyone seen the spokes turning or potentially popping out under  load?

OK guys just an update on my 50/60 XMCS wheelset. They came out of true. Rear wheel was only slightly out of true, the front had a huge death wobble, so far out of true that the bike was not rideable. I sent Peter a few videos and he agreed to pay for a local mechanic to true the wheels.

Not his wheels, not his problem, but Ben Caden of CADEN WHEELS gave me 3 hours of his time today to troubleshoot these wheels. He shot video of it all too, so expect that to be up on his channel soon (apologies in advance for being so flat in the videos, I had a big night on the drink last night!).

OK so this is what we found:

1) The wheels were not far off being true without the tyres on them. IE: The wheels are not strong enough, and with 60 psi in the tyres they go out of true.

2) Ben trued both wheels to perfection, then he had the idea to try clincher tyres instead of tubeless tyres as he said tubeless tyres create much more pressure. He stocks and backs Maxxis High Road SL tyres, a tyre I've always been curious about more for the light weight, but despite poor rolling resistance tests Ben says they roll fast so I'm more than willing to take his word and try them out.

3) Ben suggested a 25C front and 28C rear, but I thought I'd go 25C front and rear as I only ride this bike at Centennial Park (very smooth surface). Tyres went on SO much easier than the tubeless ready Aero 111 and GP5000 TT's. Tyres were inflated to 60 psi and both were put back on the trueing stand and guess what? Both wheels were quite true, not perfect, very slightly out of true, but no more huge death wobble on the front wheel.

4) Some more findings: You can quite easily squeeze the XMCS wheels with your fingers and see them deflect, Caden's wheels on the other hand I was not able to squeeze in at all, though he grabbed his wheel off me and squeezed very hard and said there still is some give if you squeeze hard enough. The rear wheel started making noises akin to Ocean Gate. IE: Carbon cracking noises when pumped up to high pressure to set the bead, freaky stuff, but the noise did stop. Make of that what you will.

5) Ben let me know that these wheels were not bad, and that he's seen worse from China. Some of the bladed carbon spokes aren't completely straight, but they use a T junction at the hub and cannot be turned at all, so nothing can be done to adjust them.

6) All this information was passed on to Peter, and he's offered me another wheelset at a heavily discounted price, but I fail to see how another XMCS wheelset would be any different (except for maybe better finishing quality which he's suggested was because I went for a custom polished finish vs. UD matte).

With the new tyres my Cervelo S5 now sits at 6.18kg's which I'm pretty happy about. I'm a little bummed the XMCS wheelset experience was much like the experience I had with the XMCS chainring (which is in my parts bin), but in this case I'm going to at least see how these wheels go before putting the ENVE 5.6 rear and Roval CLX II front wheel back on.

A - 1) You can try to inflate 110-120 PSI on our T1100 rims, All our rims should be tested on this at 120 PSI before moving to finish process. If only 60 PSI, I think the problem should come when they were polished, and some resin on the rims even affects the rims finish and roundness too, so if some resin attached on neccesary area was removed, the rim might get defective.

A- 4)  And T1100 rims layups are super light layups, I tell everyone who has asked us before, they can't use their finger to squeeze the rim lateral, as more as you squeeze, the rim layups would get affected then they will be soft. Are Caden's wheels so light too? This is why many big brands don't want to make super light layups rims.

Random probability problem, things even happen on any big brands, as I said, we don't pick any items specially for any clients, even when we send our products to those YouTubers for testing and reviewing. We can take care of these problems very well in any way as you want. At leaset, before your this kind of pertinent review, no one else has mentioned same problem before, so I am still quite confident on our products, but yes we need to some work on the glossy paintless finish details, and the details on building wheels before shipping out. I've been updating the process of getting the wheels trued on Weight Weenies forum, but forgot about this thread too.

TLDR: Peter offered a new wheelset in the same specs but in UD Matte finish and I cover postage, to which I thankfully accepted.

Peter has been VERY responsive throughout all of this via WhatsApp and just confirming that I am very happy with the resolution and as I've mentioned to Peter I am now once again confident in his brand (and service).

Peter also has confirmed that he himself will inspect the wheelset and pack them himself too. I will, as usual, report back here and elsewhere on the new replacement wheelset with photos and more when they arrive.

What wheelset would you guys be recommending for the following case:

Frame clearance between 32mm and 35mm, even though I plan on running tyres with a width of ~32mm. So I could basically go with 24iW and 30 or 32mm tyres or with 26iW and 30mm tyres. Depth should be between 60 to 65mm as I will be mostly in flat-land conditions Visually, I am aiming for a nice, clean transition between the tire and the rim.

Any recommendations?
