Anyone heard of Fierce Carbon?
« on: November 24, 2024, 06:21:51 AM »
Hi all,

I have a number of full disc wheels in my cart. Currently Fierce Carbon is the cheapest at $587 AUD with free shipping. It's 26mm and has a ratchet hub
https://a.aliexpress.com/_mt5jV0B

I was a bit suspect of the wheel being an 88mm spoked wheel with a cover. I messaged the seller asking about its construction, they replied that its "PMI wall, the same as DT Swiss 1100 and Princeton Carbonworks"
Tbh, my "if it smells, looks and tastes like shit" alarm is going off here.

Does anyone have any experience or input?

Cheers

A disc vs a deep wheel is worth a very limited number of watts, so i'd start by not buying a 26mm wheel, as this can't possibly be optimized for a 28C tyre, let alone 30 or 32, at which point, if that negates half the aero gains of the disc, you're really shooting yourself in the foot.
And if you're solving for cool factor, afaik, a real disc sounds like a disc, but a wheel with a disc cover doesnt nearly as much. And the sound of a disc is probably half its cool factor?
Fast on the flat. And nowhere else.

a disc isn't as hurt by a wider tyre as a regular rim, especially at the back a slightly oversized tyre won't make a big impact

I'm on a '14 BMC TM02 with 25mm wide rims using 25c tyres. I had to shave down the rear pads to get the brake caliper to fit!

Given I'll be using this bike a handful of tris a year, I can see myself holding on to it for quite a long time
