Just curious, with your really nice bike I recon you're a pretty good rider. Wouldn't it make more sense to tooth-up in the rear and mount a cassette with a 30? Would give you about the same range as a 36 in front (instead of your 38). Apart from that, I'm following since I'm looking for a 52/36 chainringset myself
Hey Cnasta!
Thanks for the compliment on the bike! This hobby definitely gets expensive—especially once you start heading down the weight-weenie rabbit hole!
As for my riding, I try my best! If I had more time, I could probably be stronger, but you know how it goes—life, work, and responsibilities take over.
For the Mallorca 312, I went with a 54/38 up front and an 11-34 cassette. It worked out pretty well for me. I was a bit worried because the year before, I did the 225 km course on a 50/34 with an 11-34, and that setup felt too easy. Plus, I’m lighter this year—down from 83 kg to 76 kg. The climbs in Mallorca aren’t super steep either, so I didn’t really need super low gearing.
I’ve stuck with the 54/38 and 11-34 combo since it gives me the top-end speed when I need it. The terrain where I live is pretty rolling, so I like having the 11-34 as a backup. If I were racing like some of my buddies, I’d probably run an 11-30—but these days, I just don’t have the time for racing.
