Is it normal for threads to be sticking out of these spokes?

Yes, we would assume that's fairly normal given the type of material used.

Just to clarify, these images were taken online and used for illustration purposes to highlight that ZEN is now offering wheelsets built with Berd spokes.

The photographs are actually of genuine Berd wheelsets, built and supplied by Berd themselves, and were featured in a Cycling Weekly review. We simply replaced the original hub branding with ZEN for illustration purposes.

Given that these are genuine Berd wheels, built by Berd themselves, and considering that the spokes are made from a braided polymer fibre material rather than conventional steel or carbon, I would assume some loose or protruding fibres are fairly normal and not necessarily an issue.

Berd spokes are available with our compatible J-bend and straight-pull hub options, including DT Swiss, H-Works and other hub brands we offer.

This allows customers to choose from a wide range of rim and hub combinations to suit their individual requirements.

We'll be offering these as custom-built carbon wheelsets, with weights and pricing depending on the selected configuration.

Yes, all of our carbon-spoke hubs are captive-spoke designs.

We currently have 12 different carbon-spoke hub options, and that doesn't include other hub options such as the newer DT Swiss 180/240/350 carbon-spoke hubs.

Regarding how much spoke tension changes when a tyre is fitted and inflated, we have a fixed percentage because it wouldn't be particularly meaningful across our range.

We have numerous rim depths, widths and profiles, different hub and spoke configurations, and some rims are available with three different carbon layups. Add different tyre widths, constructions and pressures and there are simply too many variables and possible combinations for one percentage to accurately represent them all.

Tyre inflation places a compressive load into the rim, so a change in measured spoke tension can occur. The amount depends on the particular rim and tyre combination.

Our wheels are properly tensioned, pre-stressed during the build process and checked afterwards. This helps stabilise the wheel before it leaves the factory. As with any tension-spoked wheel, there can still be some initial settling in use, influenced by factors such as rider/system weight, tyre pressure, road conditions, impacts and the type of riding.

So rather than quote an arbitrary "X% tension loss" figure that couldn't accurately apply across all of our different wheel configurations, we prefer to concentrate on correct spoke tension, tension balance and stability of the finished wheel.
