Cheers for the input. I'm aware of the (possible) difference in width between brands.
A 28mm tire measuring up to over 30mm is a good indication though especially with a similar rim profile.

In that case I'm thinking 28mm in the front for optimal aero, and 30mm in the back for that extra bit of comfort. But let's see how it all sizes up when they're mounted

i'd be interested in doing that. i want to build up a 50/55 set for all round use that can meet or beat the weight of my 45's. shouldn't be too difficult - they're 1190g

Peter built me a set of 50 deep, wide rims, steel bearings (they weigh more), off the shelf stuff (no exotic hubs where you have to ask yourself if you're too fat ), 1200g. So 1200g is now an "easy" target. Which is ironic because the latest release of the german Lightweight, which is supposed to be the pinnacle of german engineering... weighs 1200g (as per a GCN video from yesterday).

These ultra light hubs, are they as reliable as others and suitable for fat arses? 50g for 73$ doesn't sound unreasonable, especially considering the price of a starbucks coffee. If you're going to ride these wheels for years, that extra cost can be reasonably amortized. BUT, and that's a big butt (yes please), are the hubs for regular humans and are they as reliable as their more off the shelf counterparts? I have 15,000km on my set of Peter's wheels, and i expect them to keep rolling, i dont want my wheelsets to require constant baby sitting.

This ultra-light option is for those who want to save weight, which seems to be everyone’s goal these days. But it’s worth keeping in mind that with these super-light components, durability and longevity can sometimes be compromised.

Everyone’s priorities are different. If longevity and proven reliability are your top concerns, then sticking with a DT Swiss 240 hub is a solid choice.

Personally, I’m always swapping and testing equipment myself, so I get the trade-offs involved.

i'm not light but i have no problem being under 120kg as a full system. rider + bike + kit + accessories + minimal tool kit is ~89kg +/- 0.5kg. add max 2kg to that for a pair of full 950ml bottles.

That rider limit is great — a nice big margin, just like the XM Carbon’s 120kg.
The ultra-light gear is awesome, but no one has really managed to push the weight limit beyond 90kg for those crazy light setups. I’m probably around 85kg once you add my bike, bottles, and toolkit.
My 90kg-rated DFS wheels are holding up fine. They say 90kg max, but I was told they can handle closer to 100kg. Most OEMs don’t usually share that kind saftey factor

You’re right — I meant safety factor, not margin of error. Thanks for the correction, even if it came wrapped in unnecessary attitude.

As for the diet comment… I’m 75kg at 12% body fat with an FTP over 300W. I think I’m okay.

Maybe next time skip the condescension — you might find people respond a bit better. Just a thought.

Got out today for a short test ride wheels felt great I run tyre pressures a bit higher on first outing with sealant installed.

-Rim spec :
