At 1058g a set they’re 513g lighter than the Roval C38’s (which are also a shallower at 38mm front and back).

Great looking bike and wheels! Do you mind sharing the wheel specs? Model name, rim, freehub, spokes, etc?

I'm no expert on these. I just went with what Sander suggested keeping in mind I could go a little lighter as Gina is 50kg's.

When are your wheels due?
They've entered the EU this week so guessing I should be getting them next week.
Zoe couldn't get them shipped by air due to the size (two pairs of wheels) without having to pay extra for custom and taxes.

Ahh ok that's good to know.
I'm assuming it was obviously cheaper to ship together, would it have been much more expensive to ship them separately and How much longer then to ship together what was the estimate?

|There is no model name as is a bespoke build from Zen

I believe this is the spec below for Justin's which follows mine just a different hub

Rim Front: 40mm depth, 320g, Ultralight layup (rated for 90kg system weight). Realistically, this layup suits riders up to ~75kg once you factor in bike, bottles, and gear.
Rim Rear: 45mm depth, 380g, Superlight layup (rated for 100–110kg system weight — for reference, Craft CRW rims are rated to 100kg). My spec includes an asymmetric rear rim to help balance spoke tension and improve lateral stiffness. The superlight layup also helps with responsiveness during out-of-the-saddle climbing and increase stiffness on rear as well

3.1mm carbon spokes, 2.1g each including nipples — total spoke weight is 84g.

HG freehub for Shimano.
I believe Justin’s wheels came with the  H-Works SR-270 hubs, which are 276g.
Estimated total wheelset weight: ~1060g

There’s always going to be a trade-off between lightweight wheels and stiffness.

You could go all-out and get these wheels down to around 970g, especially now that Zen offers the lighter 226g hub as part of their builds.
Back when I ordered mine, I had to source that hub myself and send it to Zen.
But let’s be honest — there’s no point chasing 970g if the wheels don’t perform.

If you're aiming for these wheels to be more of an all-rounder rather than climbing-focused (100kg limit) , I’d suggest:

  • Front Rim: 40mm Superlight layup, 360g
Rear Rim: 45mm Superlight layup, 380g, asymmetric (you won’t notice the asymmetry once built)
Spokes: 3.95mm carbon spokes at 3.5g each including nipples
Hubs: Zen Superlight hub, 226g, 20/20 spoke count
1106g estimated if you want the 3.1mm spokes then 1050g
This setup gives you a nice balance of weight, stiffness, and durability — without compromising ride quality.

Whats is it your looking for in regards to wheels? all rounder/do it all? climbing? aero?

Good questions there. I think it was cheaper for them and because I was in no rush to get them, I went along with it.
For disclosure, I paid 1.5k USD for the two sets. USD/EUR FX rate was brilliant at the time so got them under 640eur each.
She said it'd take 28 days to get over to Europe and so far it is looking that way.
I'll post some photos once they get on and give my first impressions.

That is good value around £550 a set.
Cant wait to here your thoughts and obviously see the goods  ;D
Another David has posted his 55/64mm combo on WW with gloss finish, now I have a bit of wheel envy going on now as the gloss over UD looks lovely

Yup have to admit that you really do need to spend the time to adjust these Gen 3 ZTTO cassettes to get them shifting right, and even then they're louder than the standard Shimano cassettes (at least the 12-Speed Gen 3 is but the 11-Speed with a 12-Speed chain is dead silent on my SL6). All good when the chainline is good, but definitely louder when you're on the small cogs in the big front chainring.

I really like my gen 2 12 spd, but thank goodness wheeltop allows individual gear tuning, as its reluctant to downshift cleanly from 6/7/8 without some tuning. Once done it shifts as well as anything, but yeah, its as loud as a Sram x cassette, understandable as its hollow.

Thanks for the detailed answer! I'd be looking for an all-rounder set, but leaning slightly more towards climbing/lightweight rather than aero - so around 40-45mm deep rims. Don't actually need a new wheelset, but these weights make it very tempting  ;D

I am very thrilled about these wheels. Please advice which configuration would better suit me.
1. I am lightweight rider 56-57kg with 280w on FTP. My sprint values however are just average and I can do about 1000w in the sprint.
Climbing - 50% in the saddle, and 50% out of the saddle.
2. I am riding 60% indoors, 40% outdoors and my descending skills are mediocre. No criteriums, only may be a few alpine marathons a year.
3. Current wheels choice: Hunt 44 Aerodynamicist, with steel spokes about 1460gramm a set. Even with this set descends can be very "windy" for me.
4. What I am looking for: May be a same stability or better in the crosswind, depth 40 or 44mm ( not ready to go 35mm just yet) and shave some weight.
I do not like when the wheel does feel not solid and occasionally I ride through the potholes ( if it is safer due to the riders, cars etc..)

Which rim / hub / depth configuration will you advise? How does these wheels compare to CRW and does it worth to overpay for them ?
How long are shipping times to Germany and the duties?
Looking at the official website I have not found anything similar discussed in this thread. How do you do the order and your payment method?
Thanks!

The last time I spoke with anyone, who bought a set of Zen wheels, the manufacturing time was about 15 working days. Shipping, including taxes, took around 10–15 days.

As I’ve mentioned, and as discussed in this thread, Zen is an OEM manufacturer, not a retailer. Their website often isn’t fully up to date, so it’s best to contact them directly via email or WhatsApp for the most current information.

I can’t directly compare these wheels to CRW, but I do have a pair of XM CarbonSpeed wheels in a 50/60 configuration. I sold my 50/60 CRWs to buy those, and I’m extremely happy with them.

From what I’ve seen and experienced, if I were spending money on wheels again tomorrow, I’d still choose a set of Zen 40/45s over CRW, mainly because they’re almost half the price. That said, the CRW hub—with the spoke directly threaded into it—is very well designed, but that alone isn’t enough for me to prefer CRW wheels.

Advising others on which wheels or configuration to buy can be tricky. Obviously, if you buy a set of CRW 40/45s, the choice is straightforward, but a like-for-like setup for Zen wheels would be…

CRW wheels have a system limit of 100 kg, which aligns with Zen’s superlight layup.

Although, based on your weight, you would also be well within the limit for the ultralight version at 90 kg.

Superlight
40mm rim front 360g
45mm rim rear 380g now as I’m a heavier rider and to help balabace spoke tension in the rear I opted for an asymmetric rear rim this also helps with lateral stiffness. Now you don’t notice the asymmetry when the wheels built also most wheel brand will not do this as it means an extra wheel mold. For example Extralite do asymmetric front and rear.  At your weight though you should be ok with a regular rim profile it’s up to you or speak with Zara at Zen she may ask the engineer who is her father who owns the company.

3.25mm carbon spoke 40 number  including nipples 136g
HX Hub 20 spokes from and rear 226g

Zen Wheelset estimated weigh 1102g
CRW Generation Wheelset 1180g (21mm internal width)
CRW 2025 wheelset 1140g  (24mm internal width)

That said, if you often ride through potholes, hitting any pothole hard enough on a carbon wheel isn’t ideal—damage can happen regardless.

If you want something sturdier, you could choose the lightweight layup, which adds about 40g to the wheelset, bringing it to around 1142g—comparable to the CRW 2026 wheels.

Or you could opt for the standard layup, which adds about 80g, making the wheelset roughly 1182g. That’s on par with the previous generation CRWs and still considered lightweight!

Attached are examples of steel-spoke road wheels.

Gravel Wheel Options

Gravel wheels can be made lighter by choosing different rim layups. Here's a breakdown of the 35mm and 45mm profiles:

35mm Profile

Lightweight: 380g per rim (see attached photo), system limit 135kg
Superlight: 355g per rim, saves 50g per set, system limit 100–110kg
Ultralight: 315g per rim, saves 130g per set, system limit 90kg
45mm Profile

Lightweight: 420g per rim, system limit 135kg
Superlight: 395g per rim, saves 50g per set, system limit 100–110kg
Ultralight: 355g per rim, saves 130g per set, system limit 90kg
Lighter layups do increase cost slightly. Superlight is around $40 USD extra, Ultralight about $80 USD. Best to check with Zara for exact pricing.

There’s also a lighter hub option for carbon spokes, which could save another 50g if suitable for gravel. I’ve asked for a cost example using Berd spokes. If they can offer it at a sensible price, I might try it on a road set myself.
45mm Lightweight Rim 420g per rim per attached 135kg limit
35mm Superlight 395g per rim saving 50g per set 100-110kg system limit
35mm Ultralight 355g per rim saving 130g per set 90kg system limit

Lighter layups will increase the cost a touch think supwrlight is like $40usd and ultra $80usd but anyone intretsed would be best to get Zara to confirm obvioulsy

Lighter hub available for carbon spokes another 50g saved if suitable for gravel
And I have askde for a cost example with Berd spokes.
If they can do Berd at a sensible price consider giving that a go on a road set myself maybe.
