[Help needed] New build project - simple on a budget!

Hey all,

I’m planning a new build and could use your help sourcing a good carbon road frame and aligning the rest of the parts around it, mostly AliExpress-based, where it makes sense.

Goals:
   •   Safety and reliability come first – I’m not chasing marginal grams at the expense of structural quality
   •   Standardisation and simplicity – I want to avoid proprietary or challenging builds  (PressFit, fully internal cable routing, D-shaped seatposts, etc.)
   •   Light-ish, road-biased build – not a full-on weight weenie build, but I want it to be reasonably light, clean, and efficient
   •   Budget: Cheap, but always making safe choices

 Frame requirements:
   •   Carbon road frame (rim or disc) ideally around €500 - is this realistic?
   •   External or semi-internal cable routing preferred – easier maintenance
   •   Threaded BSA BB (no PressFit unless the absolutely necessary tradeoff)
   •   Round seatpost (27.2 mm preferred)
   •   Clearance for 28–32 mm tyres
   •   Standard stem/handlebar clamp (no integrated cockpits)
   •   Flat-mount disc is OK, mechanical disc brake compatibility welcome
   •   Minimal branding or stealthy design = bonus

 Usage:
   •   Group rides, road-focused riding (I already have a full carbon western brand gravel bike)
   •   Mixed roads, but mainly tarmac
   •   Function-first, but I want a modern aesthetic. Something simple, minimal, and clean
   •   Don’t need it to be aero or race-oriented, just a solid, sensible, enjoyable road bike

 Component approach:
   •   Open to Chinese groupsets (ZRace, Sensah, LTWOO, etc.) or even Shimano  Claris, Sora since they work all right, or Microshift if it keeps things light and smooth
   •   Prefer mechanical disc brakes for easy maintenance
   •   AliExpress cockpit, wheels, crank, seatpost, etc. are all fair game—as long as they’re safe and proven
   •   Bonus if I can keep it mostly AliExpress due to budget

Looking for help with:
   1.   Frame suggestions meeting these criteria. There’s a great listing on the supplier subforum although it doesn’t convey which are the most reliable .
   2.   What AliExpress cranksets, calipers, wheelsets, and finishing kits are reliable and worth it in this price/weight range
   3.   Any parts to avoid—or red-flag experiences from others doing similar builds
   4.   Anything I’m overlooking that’ll make or break this kind of low-maintenance, sub-€1200 modern road build

Really appreciate any input you’ve got. If I can make this happen, I’ll document the full build and weigh everything for those curious.

Parts I already have (willing to reuse if they fit the build):
   •   Shimano GRX RD‑RX812 (1×11, clutch, long cage)
   •   Shimano RD‑5701‑GS (105 10-speed, long cage)
   •   Shimano Sora front derailleur (2×9, braze-on)
   •   Shimano FC‑R3000 Sora crankset (2×9)
   •   Shimano 11–32 9-speed cassette
   •   Centerlock QR front wheel (32H, Shimano TX505 hub)
   •   Quick release skewers, unused

Willing to build 1× or 2× if it makes sense. I’m fine with ditching the 9-speed route entirely if it simplifies the drivetrain or makes room for better weight savings.

Here's my recommendations.

- not many frames these days with round seat posts or non internal cable routing. I'd suggest compromising on those things to ensure that the rest of the build is overall as you want it
- ditch all the 9 speed kit and go straight to 11 or 12 speed. Might as well go straight to 12 because the initial cost isn't much more than 11
- if you want easy maintenance, go hydraulic disc brakes. They're dead easy to set up, bleed, and you only have to do it once every 12-24 months. Heaps of good YouTube videos out there on it. Mechanical disc brakes are more fiddly, brake worse, and often don't work well with fully internal setups.
- there's not really such a thing as 'most reliable'. We have very limited sample sizes here. Most of them are good, most of the time - you just have to hope you don't end up with a dud.

- frame: Cecotti RF33 or SPCycle R088 or Velobuild VB-R177 ($500-600 USD) - the Velobuild uses a round post so that's something in its favour.
- groupset: L-Twoo RX 12 speed ($150 USD) or if you can stump up the extra, the new L-Twoo ER9 ($350 USD) or just jump straight to 105 Di2 ($600 USD) (but you'll need to stretch the budget)
- crank: Riro Racer R9 ($45 USD)
- bottom bracket: whatever fits for the Shimano crank ($20 USD)
- cassette: Zrace 12 speed ($30 USD)
- chain: Shimano M6100 ($20 USD - buy locally to avoid fakes)
- wheels: Tagoola ($350 USD)
- saddle: whatever you like off AliExpress ($15 USD, or $40 for 3D printed)
- stem/bars: kalloy stem ($10-20 USD) + Kocevlo carbon bars ($35 USD) if not going fully internal
- tyres: Continental Grand Prix TR 32mm ($25 USD x 2), or 30mm if you go with the Velobuild

Key thing with AliExpress is to wait for sales periods, stack with coupons and use cashback offers.

Regarding the frame, would your perception and summarised impressions of the ones mentioned suggest either of them is *more* reliable or proven? I get your point about limited samples and that some of the ‘data’ is anecdotal. There’s clearly a lot of passionate contributors and open minded builders on here however, so there’s possibly a collective consensus favouring specific suppliers above others.

Regarding group sets. I regularly take Strava KOM’s on an alloy bike with Claris. I have full carbon bikes with “better” kit on them but find (for myself) the legs and form make the biggest difference in the end of the day. If the bike and system weight is somewhat good I suppose I could get by on Claris just to consider an extreme but perhaps I should do more research on the Chinese group sets offered via Aliexpress. I’ve so far only spent time on researching frames.

What’s your/Chinertowns opinion regarding Toseek components, such as seatposts and handlebars.

Regarding sale periods and coupons - is the next big occasion Black Friday/cyber Monday you reckon? Can’t seem to find too many of the suggested frames on Aliexpress though.

I'm looking for a decent lightweight frame for my GF. More endurance than race geometry. Thanks for the tips on the three frames. Do you have any other suggestions where one might not burn themselves?

I really like the geometry of Ceccotti RF32 or the TanTan x-70.

I've built one two weeks ago with that configuration. Went for the Cecotti RF32 and LTWOO r9 hydraulic.
Managed to get all under 1k€ for a fully built carbon bike.

It's actually not bad for the price. And the good part is that painting in 1 colour was included.

Your best bet is to just look through the threads on here. Don't be a guinea pig and try something no one else is on. I don't really have any specific recommendations (not without knowing what kind of thing you're looking for) but the three I mentioned are really just examples of semi-decent low-budget options without being absolutely bottom of the barrel.

For groupsets, the marginal cost from going to 11 or 12 speed is quite low. It's generally not worth going down the Chinese route to go with Tiagra or below because there would probably be better second hand options locally (like a slightly older bike with 105 or Ultegra). My advice would be to go straight to 11 speed, or if you went with electronic, go straight to 12 speed. L-Twoo R9 (as others have noted) is a good cheap option for 11 speed.

Don't worry about components until you know what frame you're getting. For example, some will have a proprietary seatpost. Some like Velobuild have their own stem and bar options. Toseek is fine, but save figuring that out until you've decided on a frame.

For sale periods, there's generally one every few months. From what's been posted in the coupon thread, it looks like there's one starting in the middle of August. Typically the biggest is 11/11 (called Singles Day in China), but don't hold out for that, just do it during one of the sales periods as prices are usually similar.

Makes sense to stick with frames people here have already put miles on, so I’ll keep digging through the build threads. Good call on going straight to 11-speed (or 12 if I go electronic but personally not fussed about anything above 8+  ) and checking local second-hand offers. I have seen some geezers list 105 Di2 but for a tad much locally, perhaps those prices will start coming down.

I’ll hold off on thinking about components until I’ve picked a frame, as initially mentioned i'd like to steer clear of too many proprietary parts. Also appreciate the heads-up on the mid-August sale — I’ll watch for that rather than waiting for 11/11.
