Selling bikes at those insane price mostly because they can. They wouldn't show these crazy prices if there was no bike bro buying it to look cool at the Cafe. As we can observe, people buying bikes are ok paying a (huge) premium for the brand.
No offense intended, but this is an ill-informed and extremely entitled view on this forum. Try building a brand to sell these frames and see where your costs end up. They will be more than Tideace or Pemeants for these Long Teng frames. By the time you give margins to the factories, to bike shops etc, brands like Specialized aren't making that much and their spending on racing isnt the lavish expense people think.
Take a $600 frame assume that you can negotiate a volume discount selling 33 frames a month of 25%. Your break even for even a web based d2c type operation is probably well over $1000/frameset not including paying yourself or shops space. That doesnt include metal parts like Mondinice was doing here. Now think about the volume of frames they needed to cover the cost of the mold that they were looking to raise via Indigogo at their stated prices. What was that 400 frames? So, if you want to pay yourself, have liability insurance, shop space, etc, based in a western country you probably cant sell these frames for less than $1,500 before shipping, and the cost of things like thru axles, branded paint, etc. This assumes a lean one person shop. Throw in some money for a second employee, so social media ads, going to trade shows etc, and the prices these Chinese brands are charging starts to seem pretty darn fair just for the brand and factory to pay off a mold in a year. This is a long way from getting rich and charging prices detached from their operating expenses.
Then add 35-50% margin to be split between a distributor and your LBS and you get Specialized prices. After all they need to get paid for buying the product and the cost of capital required to hold the inventory.
We should be grateful that this site exists and we can order direct at the prices we pay. That LTK are even making one of their premium products available for direct purchase at their prices is also rare. What Peter and Justin of XMCS and Speeder, respectively sell their stuff to us for is also a fantastic deal, and we are lucky that they do it unlike the companies that have gone fully B2B.
