Continental Grand Prix (non-5000) ?

Has anyone tried the non-5000 grand prix tires?

bicyclerollingresistance.com says 4w higher rolling resistance per tire, and they weigh about 100g more than the 5k.

I can get them on ali for $65 a pair or taobao for $40 a pair so a lot more attractive than the $110 or so distributor price ($240 MSRP) for gp 5ks

are these too good to be true or is the extra 200g not that bad?

I've been confused with these same tires. BRR tested the tubeless ready version which has a different construction from the non-TR one:

Continental's site is basically useless for getting detailed info on tires. It mentions that the TR version uses a 4-ply construction and the non-TR uses a 3-ply construction.

It's my understanding that the TR version has a PolyX Breaker layer for puncture protection which isn't even mentioned on their site. I wonder if that's the missing layer on the non-TR version. Who knows?

I’m pretty sure the ply count is the number of layers the “fabric” of the tire is layered in. The Gp5k is 330tpi, which is marked as 330/3 - or 3 layers of 110tpi. According to taobao the GP TR is 240/4 and the GP non TR is 3/180.

I know higher end tires have higher TPI but not sure as to the effect

You're probably right then. I remember reading a while ago that it did include the PolyX layer but the BRR reference to that was back from 2014:

Nice find, an easy tell if they are fake is if the packaging still claims they're made in Germany. Continental moved their non-5000 Grand Prix manufacturing out of the country, so if it's claiming otherwise, that would be highly suspicious.

the gp5k are a bit overrated and expensive. since im not racing anymore i'am tring the conty ultrasport iii.
they feel quite good, even the upgrade from 25 to 28 seems worthy whitout losing performance but the comfy is so damn good
