Hey everyone!

I’m a lifelong cyclist: road, gravel, MTB, TT, city bikes, you name it! I’ve built more custom bikes than I can count, and I travel a lot. Been to almost 80 countries, many of them with my bike.

Once I had kids, trying to juggle strollers, car seats, tons of luggage, and a massive bike box on family vacations became a complete nightmare. I got so frustrated having to choose between bringing my bike or keeping my sanity that I finally decided to do something about it. I was sick of paying oversized baggage fees, stressing over whether my carbon frame would get crushed or lost by airline handlers (both happened multiple times), and renting massive (read: expensive) minivans just to get from the airport to the hotel. I wanted a real, uncompromising road/light gravel bike that I could actually take anywhere without the massive headache and cost.

That’s how my new company "Moalani Travel Bikes" was born this January!

THE CONCEPT
To solve all this, I decided to develop a folding titanium travel road bike designed to pack tool-free right into a standard, large check-in suitcase, along with my other clothes. I didn't want just a shrunken-down commuter bike; I wanted a decently capable machine engineered to feel and perform as close as possible to a true road bike. But obviously, some compromises had to be made!

It will sit on 451 wheels: the biggest size you can still just about squeeze into a standard 75x50x30 cm check-in suitcase. We chose a titanium frame because it can take a serious beating from baggage handlers and kept the weight around 8 kg. It'll be set up with a sleek 1X drivetrain and wireless SRAM AXS electronic shifting (custom builds will also allow for 100% mechanical, no worries!).

To keep things totally bomb-proof, it will roll on carbon tri-spoke wheels so you never have to deal with a busted spoke. Plus, 451 spokes are impossible to source, especially in remote places. The other two reasons for going with tri-spokes are so that a) you can more easily pack other clothes in and out of the bag and b) to allow for enough clearance when the rear wheel is folded in (spoked wheels won't allow for that, especially on the non-drive side). So, tri-spokes are not an aesthetic choice; it's a 100% functional choice. Other than that, we chose to go with trusted and pretty standard components.

PROBLEMS I WANTED TO SOLVE
I really wanted to engineer all the friction out of traveling with a bike. Moalani bikes will eliminate oversized luggage fees, which means you don't have to upgrade to an expensive SUV/van at the airport just to fit your bike. It will feature an instant, tool-free rear triangle fold so you can throw it straight into the trunk of a taxi or a rental car even if it's not packed up. Breaking it down completely to pack will take under 15 minutes, and you seriously won't need a single tool (it's all done with quick releases). You never even have to remove the crankset, pedals, cassette, headset, fork, chain, or rear wheel.

Plus, because traveling with greasy parts is the worst, we're heavily focused on waxed chains. It keeps the drivetrain totally dry and clean, meaning you can pack the bike right next to your clothes. But we keep the door open for people who nevertheless want to go with greased chains.

MODELS & TIERS
We've mapped out a few models and tiers (though it's all still a bit in flux): the aero-leaning "Moalani Strato" for pure road speed and the "Moalani Terra" for rougher roads of less developed countries (or: even light gravel). Both models really just differ in a few key areas (handlebar, tires, inner tubes, chain ring size, bar tape thickneess, potentially suspension stem), but are otherwise identical (including the frame).

I will also make it possible to just buy a frame or frame/wheel set to build your own. We plan to provide a very detailed build guide.

Complete bikes will probably come in four tiers: Core, Comp, Pro and Elite ... scaling from hybrid mechanical rim/disc brakes all the way up to fully hydraulic disc setups. SRAM levels will be Rival, mixed Rival/Force or all Force.

Before you ask, "Why rim brake only in the front for the 'Core'?" Well, the front wheel has to come off for packing, and everyone who has ever traveled with disc brake rotors that got bent will know why a rim brake in a suitcase is the best choice. For the rear wheel, this is not relevant, simply because its rotor is a lot more protected by the way it's folded into the rear triangle.

For the drivetrain, we will be offering everything from DIY Silca wax kits and pre-waxed chains to standard factory-greased setups, or you can simply bring your own chain. In fact, we will give you the choice of "Bring your own" for almost all components when you order! I'm a custom builder at heart.

TIMELINE
Right now, we're already deep in the design and CAD phase (Q2/2026) with a mechanical engineer in Germany. Many parts will be 3D-printed in titanium for more design freedom, like the entire bottom bracket and pivot shell area, the dropouts, the seat stay coupler, etc.

We'll be moving to prototyping in Q3 2026, followed by heavy testing in Q4 2026 and refinement in Q1 2027. If we hit our marks, pre-orders will open in Q2 2027, with the official launch and EU deliveries kicking off in Q3 2027. That's our slow timeline, and things may happen faster. I'm working towards a faster timeline, but wanted to be conservative with my estimates.

Bike Friday builds highly reliable, time-tested travel platforms, but their design philosophy focuses on multi-modal utility and loaded touring. The Moalani platform is designed for a completely different mission: high-speed road training and exploration.

Well, since you asked, here is the deep technical breakdown of our Unique Selling Points (USPs) compared to the Pocket Rocket or All-Packa lines:

Frame, Tubing and Aesthetics

Bike Friday platforms rely on a heavy, low-slung, single main mono-tube frame profile made from chromoly steel. While mechanically durable, this structure shifts the rider's center of mass and visually aligns the bike with classic urban utility folders. This aesthetic dogma is frequently rejected by performance roadies.

Our bikes use a unique dual-truss top tube / down tube double-diamond frame architecture. By running parallel, slender top and down tubes, we try to replicate the traditional silhouette, aggressive tracking stance, stack/reach metrics, and structural balance of a standard 700c road bike as much as possible.

Furthermore, this twin-tube configuration serves a critical secondary function: when the rear triangle folds forward, the parallel truss lines act as a protective structural cage that guards the delicate drivetrain, electronic rear derailleur, and braking components from lateral forces inside a suitcase.

To maximize power transfer and torsional rigidity under heavy climbing loads, we are also integrating solid structural gussets at both the seat tube and head tube terminations of the dual top tubes. Given the tightly constrained footprint of a small-wheeled frame, these gussets are specifically engineered to pull double duty as integrated, rigid hardpoints for accessory mounts.

Material and Weight

Chromoly steel is a reliable material for building standard bicycles, but its mass profile creates an immediate bottleneck when designing for strict airline baggage envelopes. A steel travel frame inevitably forces a choice between an excessively heavy bike or fragile, paper-thin wall profiles.

We utilize titanium as our primary frame material. To unlock total design freedom without sacrificing material density, our complex junctions - including the entire bottom bracket core, the pivot shell area, the seat stay coupler, and the dropouts - are 3D-printed using advanced Additive Manufacturing (Selective Laser Melting).

These printed components undergo strict secondary post-processing, specifically Hot Isostatic Pressing, to eliminate internal micro-voids and align grain structures. By anchoring this titanium core to a highly calculated mix of premium carbon and aluminum secondary components (specifically a carbon fork, carbon cockpit, and carbon tri-spoke wheels), we lock the total weight of the complete bike to around 8 kg. This keeps the platform light on the road while protecting it against structural fatigue and luggage handler impacts.

Packing & Tool-Free(dom)

To pack a Bike Friday Pocket Rocket into a standard travel case, a rider must engage in substantial manual breakdown: pulling out wrenches, unbolting structural components, extracting greased axles, or uncoupling frame elements. This introduces significant packing time before as well as assembly time after a transit.

The Moalani eliminates tool requirements entirely through a nested, quick release-only disassembly. The entire breakdown takes under 15 minutes and requires absolutely zero tools:
  • The Rear Triangle Fold: The entire rear triangle assembly swings forward on a robust bottom bracket pivot node and nests completely flat inside the dual-truss top and down tube main frame lines.
  • Component Retention: Crucially, you do *not* remove or unbolt a single core drivetrain component for packing. The cranks, pedals, chainring, rear wheel, 13-speed cassette, rear derailleur, and chain remain on the bike during transit.
  • The Contact Points: The front wheel, seatpost/saddle assembly and the integrated head tube stem/cockpit are also removed via quick-release clamping interfaces.

Down Tube & Carbon Tri-Spoke Synergy

One of our most hyper-specialized engineering USPs centers on how we package the drive-side clearance paths during the rear fold. To keep the rear wheel and cassette fully mounted to the frame when collapsed, we are incorporating a flat section along the drive-side down tube. This flat profile is calculated to pass directly through the open clearance window between the tri-spoke wheel blades and the backside of the largest cassette cog.

Many performance folders are hamstrung by legacy component standards, rim brake only configurations, or proprietary hub widths that trap riders in closed component ecosystems. The Moalani frame is built entirely around modern, future-proof component architecture. We natively support premium 13-speed electronic and mechanical groupsets and integrate a standard Universal Derailleur Hanger (UDH / Direct Mount) layout.

Yet, we are not forcing proprietary restrictions on our riders; custom builders can purchase our standalone frame set or frame/wheel set kits and leverage our highly detailed Build Guide to assemble their bike using their own preferred component selections. That can go from full mechanical to full electronic/hydraulic, 11- to 13-speed.

Part 2: The Logic of the US Travel Market

Your second question targets the core of our business case: why would a North American rider invest in a packable travel bike when major US legacy carriers (American, Delta, United) canceled their oversized bicycle luggage fees roughly five years ago?

While the elimination of the *oversized size fee* was a welcome change for cyclists, looking at that policy in isolation ignores the actual physical constraints and logistical bottleneck of real-world travel.

Weight Ceilings

While US airlines removed the dimensions penalty for bikes, they rigorously maintain their weight limits. Exceeding them triggers immediate, aggressive overweight baggage fees that can run up to $100–$200 per flight.

A traditional 700c hardshell bike case or heavy padded transit bag weigh between 5 and 9 kg of dead weight on their own. Once you add a standard 8 to 10 kg road bike, heavy tools, a pump, shoes, and a helmet, you will hit those ceilings very quickly, even without adding any additional clothes/items.

Because we target a weight of ~8 kg and because our bikes will collapse flat, they pack cleanly into a standard, lightweight 75x50x30 cm check-in suitcase. This leaves you with ample weight margin to utilize the exact same bag as your primary suitcase for your actual travel clothes and wardrobe, completely eliminating the need to check a second piece of luggage. That is if you travel light in terms of clothing.  ;D

Waxed Drivetrain

You cannot cleanly pack a traditionally oiled or greased road bike directly against your wardrobe inside a single piece of luggage without ruining your clothes. That's why we recommend a completely dry, melt-waxed chain through our technical partnership with Silca. Because the mechanical core is dry to the touch and sheds zero oil or grease, the bike blocks zero secondary utility; it safely shares a single standard suitcase with your garments without excessive contamination or the need for internal dividers. Some garment bags are recommended, but not necessarily needed, depending on how dirty you'll let your bike get.

Off-Airport Logistics

The true benefit of a packable travel road bike does not end at the airport check-in counter; it begins the moment you land. Traveling with a massive, flat 700c bike box introduces immense off-airport friction:

  • Vehicular Constraints: A standard 700c box will not fit into the trunk of a standard taxi, rideshare sedan, or compact rental car. It forces you to continuously pay for premium vehicle upgrades (SUVs, minivans) just to transport your gear from the airport to the hotel.
  • Transit Limitations: Large bike boxes are a logistical nightmare when navigating regional trains, transit buses, airport luggage lockers, or tight European train corridors.
  • Real Estate: A massive bike box takes up huge amounts of space in compact urban hotel rooms or holiday rentals.

Again our bikes will fit into a standard, unassuming check-in bag that handles, rolls, and fits anywhere a regular piece of vacation luggage does.

Global View

While US domestic legacy carriers are lenient on bike bags, the moment your travel deployment hits regional routes, the rules shift drastically. Inter-European budget carriers (like Ryanair or EasyJet) and domestic airlines across Asia enforce highly strict dimension and weight parameters with steep financial penalties for sporting equipment. If you are a frequent international business traveler or family vacationer, this is a very real financial burden.
