Choice of deep TT wheels
« on: September 22, 2026, 04:12:13 AM »
For context: I'm building a cheap tt bike (bxt tt119), and I need help choosing a wheelset.
I have multiple options:
- Elite wheels ent 2.0 82mm. Cheapest, however only 18.5mm internal.
- Superteam 88mm. Less info about them. 25mm external only.
- Elite wheels slr 2.0 82mm. Ratchet + 21mm internal.
- Other sellers. Maybe serenade?

Is the extra width and ratchet worth paying more?
If anyone has tested any of these or has any other option (on the cheaper side) please share!

Don't have much to add, but I don't think you are right about superteam wheels. The rim brake version is 25 external, but the disc brake version is 23 int / 30 external. That's pretty much perfect for a TT wheel IMO.

Serenade has option for 80 mm with 23 mm internal.

Hi,

I've been on the same search.

Goals:
  • 80mm or deeper
  • at least 30mm external, preferable wider

I've landed on the Seranade wheels, or Bitranz rims (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005010271225480.html)

At the moment I'm chatting with Serenade, because I do prefer a wheelset over building the wheels myself.

your frame clears 32C. you'll be faster if you're comfortable --> wider tyres. Wide tyres on wide rims are faster too, or at least not any slower --> Serenade has TRW80S, 34mm wide (23 internal), hooked (obviously), 80 deep. Put a 28 or 30C on that, and you'll have a rim wider than your tyre (aero maxxing) while comfort maxxing.
That's double maxxing. That's what she said.

I'm sure others have similar moulds. Peter, probably.

By buying a 34mm wide rim, you're also insurance maxxing, in that your resale value will be higher for longer (~ all frames that clear 32C should clear a 34mm rim (if not they're lying on frame clearance, essentially), and a 34mm rim lets you run 28, 30 or 32, with a great tyre+rim profile. Narrower rims are on the decline (i'd never buy one, full stop). A wider rim might also be more stable in cross winds.

As far as I know, for TT you don´t always want wider because at some point it will penalize your aero savings.
I don´t see pros going more than 28mm in TTs or triathlons (yet).
What you don´t want is the tyre being wider than your rim.
This photo is from my wheels, i bought a "princeton carbonworks" 3 spoke and rear full disc. The sheet says that both wheels have 21mm internal and 28mm external diameter. They have a GoodYear Supersport FFr in 28mm.
I think they are a good match.
Hope it helps.

I'll just leave this here: https://www.instagram.com/p/DdjiseSEf4I/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link&stkn=MzRlODBiNWFlZA==

Remco was running 30mm tyres on a really wide looking front wheel for his TT World title in Montreal.

Yes those look like a great match. And I think trying to follow the 105% rule is never a bad idea

After considering different options, yesterday I bought the serenade wheels. Pricewise all were in a similar range, but the modern profile these had made me pick them.

Which ones did you decide to go for?
I'm still debating if I should go for the cheaper set (about 380€ + shipping) with 24 steel spokes. Or to get the more expensive set (570€ + shipping) with 20 carbon spokes.
Both are the 80mm deep rim with 23mm internal.

At the moment I'm leaning towards the cheaper set, both the spoke count and aero spokes are probably pretty marginal.

The cheap set with steel spokes. I think it made more sense in my case (cheap build with cheap frame). If you've cared about the weight at any point of your build, maybe it makes sense going for the carbon spokes.

I think for TT one of the benefit of carbon spokes is vibration dampening reduce fatigue
