Cyclocross tires more durable? Not really. It all depends on the brand/model you pick.
A CX tire will show a more structured thread, but also usually softer, for a better grip. So that if you ride them 100% on the road they will melt like snow (OK, I'm pushing this too far now). Still, I use Continental CX Speed tires on my wife's 27.5" MTB. She uses it mostly on the road. They last long... but that's because she does not ride much

They are perfect for the usage: feel more secure then a road tire (very grippy), very comfy (35mm wide), faster then a 2" MTB tire and still enable to ride on "dirty" roads or cross some light and short trails. But again if you use it on your commuter, with a high mileage, they won't last long.
