Title: IMTOS universal carbon thru axle
Post by: Kar25 on November 21, 2025, 02:02:08 PM
Does anyone have any opinions or experiences with this IMTOS thru axels?
To me they look very interesting in terms of specifications.

I'm thinking of getting a pair, the design is tempting as it's universal and would work if at some point I get a new frame. You can get them for about 160€ now on Aliexpress. Has anyone got them yet?

I'm waiting for mine, to the Avenger Shuttle SL. I have already quite light ~38g, but that one will be even lighter  8) I also ordered a bottle cages, but their project, quite fancy. I will provide an update and some unboxing probably.

Nice, can you post the measurements too, I'm curious what's the adjusted max / min length. My stock thru axles are 67g so a bit more weight to loose, those 7g bottle cages are a bit too extreme for me.

Sure, not a problem! I have some light from Ali already, not bad in general.

DFS carbon selling exactly the same set its like $169usd with delivery hear is the link https://www.facebook.com/groups/975602387895509/permalink/1167872072001872/                                         . I would Rather have Sixweel Ti Thru axles myself not sure about having to attached the threaded end I would rather have all one piece in Ti or bonded like Overfast

That design of threading the end cap in place has been used for long time in cargo axles I read and it's worked fine. But ofcourse the axles have been metal.

I need them for a Canyon Endurace CF SLX Disc that I'm trying to get under 6.5kg and has 1.0 thread pitch. Being able to transfer the axles to my future frame whatever thread pitch or length it has sounds great as 1.0 thread pitch is a dead end.

Supposedly with the Overfast is safer to use a wrench on both sides.
I've been very happy with the chaser ti, they were under $100 usd pre tariff, and aside from needing an 8mm wrench they've been flawless.

What is the thread pitch?

You can see in the photos that adapters with 1.0 / 1.5 / 1.75 thread pitches are included. I asked the manufacturer and they told me that this set fits any frame.

Oh, ok. I thought it's just different colors to match your frame. Good to know. Added to the cart for future :D

So that thread is just screwed onto the axle? I dunno man, don’t trust this.

I just got the thru axles in the mail today, the shipping took 15 days to Europe.
Had to pay an extra 50 euro in import tax before the delivery.

It seems like the axles are  to short so when installing the correct thread socket to get the right length the drive side of the hub will be resting on the threads of the thru axle.

Im no mechanic so don't know if it will be an issue but it doesn't feel alright.

Pm'd the seller on AliX but the seller states it's not an issue.
The seller replied within minutes so great support.

Weighted 28gr for the pair with the correct threads installed, changing the thread socket is very easy.

"resting on the threads of the thru axle" you dont need all the threads into the frame.. :P

I got mine thru DFS. Pretty much the same as Imtos.

Had to contact DFS because the heads they send is so random and it only include 1 1*1.0*20mm and no 12*1.0*24mm which i needed for the rear axle. DFS said that they will send 24mm to fit my rear axle length. Anyone have experience on using them already?

Does the thread go all the way through? Technically, thru-axles aren't really axles in the engineering sense. The hub has its own axle that actually does the work of an axle. The endcaps press onto the axle and then sit on the fork and frame dropouts, so the load path to the wheel shouldn't include the thru-axle. But the thru-axle is part of what gives the fork lateral stiffness, so the bending forces transferring from the fork into the thru-axle could be problematic.

Have a look at this FB profile from Jason Zhang at imtos.

Those tests are not good. They brace the axle in a jig on the carbon shaft, not the thread insert. Maybe that's the protocol for standard thru axles and it could normally be valid, but this is a whole different case. It's not the carbon shaft that's the questionable part here, they need to be testing these by loading the thread insert and I'm sure the engineers would be aware of this.

They lock Thru Axles into a jig and use a torque wrench to failure.

No doubt it requires careful assembly on use of anti seize or torque wrench. For an experienced mechanic it is fine, but I see problems for the average rider, who maybe does not pay as much attention…

And for me, carbon thru axles present too many compromises for the sake of saving maybe 25 grams versus lightweight alloy thru axles, especially when you have to change the wheel out on a ride. Using two tools or using specific torque is not going to happen…

Yeah. This. Ti axles are close enough in weight. I just wish Chaser would put their hex on the other end...

I've painted their tests as questionable, but I do think Imtos know what they're doing. Your level of worry should probably depend on your weight.

I have tested my axles on the trainer yesterday. I had some short sprints, more than 1100w. Tomorrow I have some though threshold with some hard stands so also quite demanding for the bike. Then I will verify the conditions of the axles. The only concerning things for me is the shape of the ending of the axle. In the set there are some plastic adapters, but not the accurate shape as I have.

I've tested this on road earlier and it held up during my threshold uphill session (9mins with 300 average power 2 times repeat). I'll try some sprint session next week. Just need some rest :D

There should be adapters in the box to make the end flat like your other thru axle.

Yeah, I know that, however have a look. I attached almost all "ending" options for the axle. If I use the thin and flat one, the thread is a bit short, around 0.5 cm. For now I used it without any adapter, it's working.

I'm in the same boat, so I just asked for 18mm p1.5 heads. Seems like the kits come with them now but the batch I have has a lot of really random sizes. Thru axles dont need to thread all the way through to be safe and secure. It is better that you place the correct adapter and have the threads come a bit short versus the non-tapered portion of the axle having less contact with the fork.
Title: Re: IMTOS universal carbon thru axle

So you suggest to use that one, with the flat adapter, like you said, the thread will be a bit short, aorund 0.5 cm.

The more people post about these, the dumber I think they are (sorry to those who have bought).

1. They've clearly not got the lengths quite right.

2. The anodized threaded sections look pretty in the box but chances are you're going to wind up needing the ones in a colour that don't match your frame.

3. Why the hell does anyone want axles that can be moved between frames? If I'm getting a new frame, I can get new axles - in the meantime, I'd rather there was a permanent bond between the thread and the axle.

Weight. And they're interesting and new :)

Preface with I haven't ridden mine yet, just test fitted. In your situation I would change the threads to be the longer option, and then use the concave-flat spacer that's a bit thicker. Or a combination of spacers to make the longer thread fit. Not having the concave spacer after the convex head doesn't seem correct. I would assume the concave/convex interface locates and distributes the clamping force evenly so you definitely want that.

Having read your post you probably have some steal and old bike, even a brand that doesn't exist ;) we just like and enjoy some new stuff and we love to test it, that is all :) moreover, the weight ;) I also noticed, that more often some people comment posts, and they have or no advice or just simply want to offend someone, and they have no clue and don't want to help, which is dumb :)

I’m satisfied with the testing they’ve provided.

These are thru-axles and need to be torqued to no more than 8–9Nm, which is the same specification as my Overfast and Sixweel axles.

I’m not an engineer, but the testing appears appropriate, and they’ve been very transparent with both their process and the results — something many companies don’t typically provide.

So I’m comfortable taking an informed view rather than listening to armchair experts who don’t work within the cycling industry question whether the product is suitable for use.

From what they’ve shared, it looks like they’ve carried out sufficient testing to ensure the product is safe and fit for purpose. Given the level of information they’ve made available, I’m confident they wouldn’t release it to market if it didn’t meet the required standards.

Plenty of people buy carbon wheels based purely on brand reputation without ever asking to see test data — at least in this case, the data has been openly shared.

To each their own :) - I'm sure they are strong enough (especially when tested in a lab), but I'd rather have axles whose color isn't dictated by thread pitch, that are definitely the right length, and don't introduce a point of failure if a small screw comes loose, but there's a market for everything.

If everyone only posted about stuff they personally owned, this forum would be even quieter than it is already.

That’s fair — different priorities for different riders.

In my case, I wasn’t looking at them purely from a “new and interesting” angle. What mattered more to me was whether they’ve been tested appropriately and whether the torque specs align with existing standards (which they do).

I agree lab testing isn’t the whole story, but it’s still more useful than speculation. Given that the manufacturer has published both process and results — which many brands don’t — I’m comfortable making an informed decision based on that.

As for the modular/threaded design, I understand the preference for a permanent interface. For me, correct fit and proper torque matter more than whether the interface is one-piece or modular.

No product is perfect, but based on the available data, I don’t see anything inherently unsafe about them, unless someone chimes in with and problem!

Axles have been tested, also the bottle cages. I'm very pleased and satisfied. For now I can fully recommend the product. All is fine, without any slack, after longer 400w intervals, after sprint, even over 1200w no issues. I know, garmin and compare the watts shows some different values.

I don't like the business model where companies create a "universal kit" that has lots of extra parts that you will never use, and the various piece parts end up taking up space in a drawer somewhere.  The consumer ends up having to pay for all the adapters plus the baked in profit selling extra parts you don't need.
Come on!  Supplying a 1/4" drive ratchet wrench?   Who doesn't have one already?  I have at least 4, 1/4 drive ratchet drives.  (The extra long Torx is cool, but one would use it twice then it would sit in the tool box for the next 10 years not being used.

IMTOS appears to not want to create a fit chart for all the configurations and sell their product per a specific length and thread pattern.

Not for me.  Too expensive for not enough weight reduction.  $/gram savings = no go for me

Not enough weight reduction 🤣
They are like 24g a set. How light do they need to be at that price then?
Most lightweight Thru Axles on the market are in the $200usd territory and around a similar weight.

My perspective is $/gram for weight savings.
Purchasing this set of thru axles costs $220.   I weighed a pair of my average thru axles =90 grams.  Weight savings is 66 grams
Cost per gram versus my existing thru axles is $3.33 per gram savings.

I recently spent $550 US dollars on my upgrading my bikepacking camping gear.  I was able to reduce my camping gear weight by 1456 grams.   This works out to $.038 per gram.  Much better way to reduce weight than a set of expensive ultralight thru axles.

For years, my cost/gram saving threshold was around $1.00 per gram.   As stated before. Not enough bang for the buck savings!  $/gram savings = no go for me.  There are numerous other more cost effective ways for most riders to remove 66 grams from their bike. Very low level priority of weight reduction

regarding the power meter, it's funny. I did very detailed comparison, it's here on the forum. Now I'm repeating that to have all the data outdoor. I basically provided data for sprints, all above 1100w, some even more than 1200w, 8 of them. All were almost identical as Favero Assioma Duo. I added again the screenshot, I can provide the fit file.

Even high powered sprints don't put same stress on the components as heavy braking or hitting unexpected potholes.

I live in Poland, believe me, not main roads are not a carpet :D the asphalt many times is rather the last possible category, especially after the harsh winter. But, give them some time, for now those are handling very good.

regarding the power meter, it's funny. I did very detailed comparison, it's here on the forum. Now I'm repeating that to have all the data outdoor. I basically provided data for sprints, all above 1100w, some even more than 1200w, 8 of them. All were almost identical as Favero Assioma Duo. I added again the screenshot, I can provide the fit file.

yes, looks great! :D

I might return mine lol. The thread is too loose for the riding type I do (racing and lots of climbing).

The test is wrong thats not how  the axle is mounted on the frame and the loading is not only shear.
The weakest interaction is the carbon to aluminum joint i guarantee you if the  support is captive on both ends like on the bike the failure loads will be much lower.

WILL WAIT FOR LONG TERM INUSE  ISSUES.

We will see and I hope I will never check this what you are saying. For now, all is stable, all is fine, no marks or any kind of use of the axles. I recently swapped my wheels so I could verify the conditions of the axles. I rode more than 500 km at the moment, so probably we need to wait a bit longer.
