Tire Clearance on Evolve Cima GR: (Photos: https://www.facebook.com/groups/975602387895509/posts/1339069638215447 (https://www.facebook.com/groups/975602387895509/posts/1339069638215447))

With a 40.69mm measured tire, I have 11.92mm of space on EACH side on the back wheel. With 4-6 mm of space around the tire, this allows you to go with any gravel tires I am aware of that are 50-622. Going larger on the back will be determined by whether you have a 2x and the tread type you are putting on.

Is it going to fit the big Thunder Burts or MTB tires on the back? No.

Will it fit the Dubnital on the back? That will depend on your rims.

50s easily fit on the front... with the same tire on the front, I had 13.00mm on each side. IF you felt the need to go big with tires, you could run larger on the front than the back, of course. IMHO, when truly on gravel or single-track, you should be doing that anyway!

Any reason why you chose to go with Shimano instead of SRAM? I've been on the fence about whether to build the GRX + Ultegra shifters or SRAM Force-GX Mullet

I have nothing against SRAM, and I have it on two other bikes (one road bike with Red/Force and one Gravel bike with Rival/Red XPLR mix).   Shimano is cheaper right now, by a lot. I bought the groupset pieces off AliExpress from the Anrancee store. The equivalent Red E1 XPLR would have cost MUCH more.

Do you think the braking performance would be worth the cost difference? I'm looking to build up my Cima GR with XPLR Rival shifters (better brakes) + X0 or GX RD, but I'm also on the fence about a full AliExpress GRX827 + Ultegra shifters. Mainly worried about braking performance more than price.

I don't think the SRAM braking is better than Shimano. I think it is different, and some people prefer one over the other due to lever feel and design. SRAM D1 was horrible, of course, but the E1 is what people like now, and I think that upgrade was huge, but not really over Shimano. If people are super concerned with braking, a bigger improvement would be 180/160 rotors instead of 160/160 or 160/140!

I really love the way the Cima GR looks especiallywith bigger tires. Seems like you have set it up for Road use right now, what do you think of the 10-51 cassette spacing? Like you i think the XPLR groupsets are too expensive and thinking of going shimano 1x 12 speed. Just worried about the cog spacing, with the jumps being too big. How has it been for you so far?

Those photos are with tires measuring 38.  I actually put on 38s, which measure 42 now. I have it set up for the Champagne gravel (rails-to-trails) gravel we have around where I live. I would never need more than 45mm for anything within 3-4 hours of me. When I did use 50mms on my other gravel bike (Lauf Seigla), I still used a 45mm on the back.

I don't mind the spacing. I spend almost all my time in 18-33 on the back anyway, as my area has lots of rolling hills. I also come from MTBing originally, so even after 25 years of road riding, I am still fine with the bigger jumps when at the big gears in the back. The simplicity of any button or lever on the left being one shift and the right the other is such a joy.

That's a ton of saddle setback and a very short stem for that size.

Can I ask what about the geometry made you fit it like that, rather than an inline or forward position and a 110 or 120?

If you have proper calipers can you do total Gap at the tire both at front fork and the rear

This is setup for my gf. It fits her and her proportions, riding style. It is a 90 stem. 90 stem is not long for a gravel bike. I know people are going longer if they want a race bike, but that is not how she is using it.

Have you tried fitting bigger tires? I'm was curious about the clearance with 50 mm's. I was convinced after seeing your photos (can't see the photos from FB anymore) showing the clearance but a poster on the weight weenies forum said that with a measured 50.2 mm tire the clearance was only 2.75 mm on the rear. I was hoping I could fit pathfinder 2.2's but seems like that was a foolish long shot.

With the Pathfinder 700x50 TLR on a 24mm inner width rim and 1.9 bar it looks quite OK.

Thanks for the photo! I have two questions:

1. How are the tires? Apparently the 2.2 tested really well but seems like they won't fit so I'm also thinking about the 50 mm instead.

2. What frame protection tape are you using and where did you get?

Thanks again!

Sorry for the slow reply. I am the OP of the thread.  My gf and I have not put bigger tires on. I stand by what I said about actual measurements. She still has the 42 WAM tires on now and I am 100% certain it would fit 50 WAM tires from what I can see.   I do want to say that, as someone coming from a MTB background, I don't understand why more people do not just consider going with a smaller rear tire.  This has always been VERY common in MTBing, going back decades. There is no need, especially on gravel, for a tire as big in the back as the front, so people could just size down a bit. I actually often didn't even use the same tire (not just size) when I competed in XC MTBing. I realize some people don't like the look of two different-size tires, but I am not one of those people who are bothered by that.

Well, I don't want to hijack the thread author's post with the details of my CIMA GR build.  8)

I've mounted the Pathfinder in 50mm front and rear. Running them at 1.8 to 1.9 bar, they work flawlessly in dry conditions. I've now ordered the 2.2 version as well as the Tracer in 700x50 to have alternatives for wet weather.

I should mention that this gravel bike is clearly designed as an aero race gravel bike, so in my opinion, putting an MTB tire on this frame doesn't make much sense.

The protection cover tape was included with the Evolve Kreuza Top Tube Bag and was just barely long enough.

I have the Evolve Cima GR in Sahara Nude. I don't fully agree with the tire clearance talking on Weight weenies forum (also the Di2 2X talk is nonsense. There is a cable port under the derailleur front hanger and a seatpost battery clip included. In don't think they even read the manual).

Normally I don't post on forums but will share my own measurements:

Front
Tufo Thundero 48 - 9Velo GV45 SW (iw 32mm): measured width 49,5mm with 6,25mm clearance both sides.
> This is 6mm nominal clearance for 50mm width (pretty standard)

Back
Tufo Thundero 44 - 9Velo GV45 SW (iw 32mm): measured width 47mm with 7mm clearance both sides.
> This is about 5,5mm nominal clearance for 50mm width

@JR: thank you for this usefull information. It's contradicting the WW posts indeed. Would you have a chance to measure the height of both tires. It seems that that might be an important factor.

Thanks for the details as I was planning on using Thundero as well on my Cima GR build. I'm planning on using wheels that are 30 inner width and was wondering if I would be close to the 6mm on each side in the rear with the thundero 48? Would you have a picture you could share of your current setup front and rear? Thank you so much for the info!

I expect the clearance would be closer to 4,5 - 5mm with 48 Thundero because of the height of the tire. Tire height Thundero 48 is about 2,5mm higher than 44mm Thundero

My setup:
Front Thundero 48
Back Thundero 44

nice bike. that's a great looking build. given how similar the Cima road rides to an SL8 i would imagine the Cima GR is an awful lot like the Crux 5 save a hair less tire clearance.

Thanks! By the way, have you had the chance to ride the bike a little? How do you like it? Lastly, how was the fit and finish on the frame, fork and handlebar? I know the Cima road bike had a great reputation in that regards and I'm hoping it's the same with the Cima GR. Big reason why I prefer it to the Tavelo Grow where fit and finish seems to be hit or miss at the moment.

I did 4 rides on it (about 250km) and I like it a lot. It's very light (7,6 kg with padels, combination of Sram Force and Rival XPLR 1x13), it's stiff but also comfortable. Only 350 grams heavier than my 2025 Giant TCR Pro 0. When the bike is up to speed it maintains the speed very easy and flies over gravel and forrest roads. On normal roads the stearing is less direct/agile compared to my TCR but thats normal for a longer wheelbase gravel bike. I like the new Kreuza GR handlebar a lot. Keep in mind it's a riser bar (15mm). In my situation I have the handlebar fully slammed without spacers which I not provided beforehand. A more agressive riding position suits the bike well.
It's a very big upgrade to my previous gravel bike Orbea Terra M20team where I sat more upright.
The Cima GR is about 1,5kg lighter and thats a lot.

The build up en fit was very easy. I maintain my bikes myself and have all the needed tools. All components fitted without adjustments and no paint overspray was over critical positions like break mount positions and bottom bracket faces. Packaging and finish are top notch. I haven't been able to discover any aesthetic imperfections.

I bought it direct with Evolve because I didn't want to wait long for other resellers. It was a little bit risk/unknown (also for the long wait +/-70 days to arrive) but all communication was great.
I think it's a great bike for the money.

Only cons:
- Inner tube storage is relative small and the opening is above the drink bottle position that is less easy to shove in the inner tube bag. The cover is also a little bit simple compared to the rest of the bike.
- Guiding brake line through fork was not easy. No good internal routing
- I ordered the Kreuza Aero bottles. Shape is nice but it has a standard spout (no squeeze like Camelbak)

I also made the decission between Tavelo Grow and Cima GR. The possitive reviews from the road Cima tipped the scales for me.

i currently have an original Cervelo Aspero. it has been a good bike but i have been considering between the Cima GR and the Crux 5. My road bike is a Tarmac SL8 in the 10r layup. Pondering the Crux 5 with the Apex build but i also do enjoy assembling and maintaining my own bikes and the Cima GR definitely has my attention. The geo on both of the Cima's is very close to that of their big S counterparts.

I recommand to use a cable routing set with magnet. Makes the work a lot easier, especially for routing through a handlebar.

This is the answer that Evolve gave me when mentioning my concerns about the apparent limitation of certain 50c tires:

Thanks for your message.

Actual tire width may vary depending on the tire brand, model, tread design, rim internal width, tire pressure, and installation conditions. Therefore, 50c tires from some brands work fine on our frameset when fitted to the wheelset. You may refer to the feedback shared by our customer.

However, our recommended tire size is 35–45 mm. To avoid compatibility issues, we still suggest you use tires within this range.

Please feel free to contact us if you have any other questions.

Best regards

A 45mm Hutchinson Toureg Race does fit, I think 5mm at the tightest spot. This is on your 32i rim. This is a pretty big 45c tire,  So I'm confident any 45 will fit in the rear.

For 50's, I've seen a report that a Pathfinder 50 will fit, though they run narrow and short, 47mm or so.

The tires that don't fit on a 23.5 innuendo rim:

Schwalbe RXPro 50 (measures 49.8 at 20 psi, used tire), less than 3mm

Schwalbe RPro 50 (measures 49.6 40 psi, new), clearance right at 3mm

Hutchinson Toureg Race 50, 52.2, rubs on one side, less than 2mm other side. Note, Caracal Race is the same dimensions so I'm guessing same result.

Continental Dubnital 50, 49.6, new 40psi, less than 2.75 at the chainstays, this tire is pretty tall.

Looks like they are pretty honest about the 50c clearance but I'm not exactly sure if the Cima Gr is the right frame for me as it looks like my Crux that are rated at 47c had more clearance then this frame that states 50c...not reassuring but at least they are being honest about it when asked directly.

I have to say that I now looking into the XM Carbonspeed GRT frame as a potential alternative to the Cima GR...Looks to be a similar price with shipping and everything added up and it looks less polished than the Cima (plus 400g heavier overall, if not more when included the cockpit) but it looks like a well designed and aero frame with tons of clearance and a modern race gravel geometry.

I'm also in doubt about this frameset.
At one hand: most of the time I would be in situations where 45mm is sufficient and with the right tire, it seems that a sporadical 50mm set-up still will fit.
On the other hand: 45mm as standard clearance doesn't justify a new bike for me. Going for bikes with big clearnance like XMCS and Tavelo, result in less responsive bike handling which I also not might like.
The Winspace G5 might be an alternative, but I guess the weight is not so low for those frames.

I'm the one who posted on WW, and stumbled across this thread.  A couple of quick things:

-I hadn't even assembled the bike when someone asked about the Di2 port for the FD, which I hadn't seen. When I finally built the bike I discovered it, and updated my post on WW. I have no intentions of running Shimano on this bike so I hadn't really even thought about it. Plus, I was busy test fitting a ton of tires on different wheels...

-Regarding the tire size, some folks here are missing the point.  The choke point is not the width, it's clearance at the tread cap. "I tried 44's or 45's and had x clearance" doesn't really mean anything...  The seat stays taper in--pretty severely--towards the top. As a result, the first 50c tire I tried, a 50c RX Pro, was actually hitting the frame at the tread cap on one side on a 32i rim. It measured over 50mm, so I fit it to a 25i rim. The clearance was still no where near adequate. Clearance at the sidewall is absolutely fine, but as tires get wider, they get taller, this choke point moves up the stay, and the sides of the tread cap are perilously close to the stays.  It's a simple geometry problem. It's also why extrapolating clearance on a 44c tire and thinking "oh, a 50 will fit" is just not at all useful.

There are some 50c tires that will fit, not question; however, many of the most commonly used 50's will not.  They are passing that info along, which is great, and I know they are doing some of their own testing as well. Note that my bike is a size M, and since the other sizes are using different molds, it's possible this may be different on other sizes.  I can only speak to my frame.

One last thing to note, these are all static measurements. I have yet to encounter a gravel tire without some runout at the tread cap. Some are worse than others, but 1mm seems to be the minimum.  That means that 2.75mm of clearance becomes 1.75mm--or less, depending on the tire. The runout is always going to be significantly worse at the tread cap than the sidewall, exacerbating the problem.

A first they were honestly a bit dismissive (not the CS rep, but their engineering team) until I pushed back, and then they dug a bit deeper and realized I wasn't just making things up. They revised their recommendations, which is great. They are also doing some more testing, and I recommended they test a few specific tires to possibly come up with a list of tires they can recommend for those looking for a 50c tire in the rear.  All of this is regarding clearance on the rear; the front meets the originally published spec of 50mm with 6mm of clearance, and while it's a bit tighter at the crown I found it adequate with both a Dub and RX Pro in a 50 on a 32i rim, so I have no issues there.

Big picture, the bike will work great for me, which is why I'll deal with not being able to use my favorite rear tire, the RX Pro in a 50. I have another gravel bike with more clearance, but this bike will see dual duty when I'm traveling, and I'm just as likely to do a crit race on it as a gravel race, so it's a tradeoff work making. For those who want more clearance though and for those looking at fitting a MTB tire or 55 gravel tire, they should look elsewhere. I think it's just good for people to understand the limitations, because they are real, and as I mentioned to them I think it's pretty key that they set customer expectations up front. It's just better for everyone involved.

As far as the comment about it being an aero gravel bike: well, so is the new Factor, Crux 5, Scott Addict, XMCS, Tavelo Grow, new Grail, etc....   The fact is that the aero gravel market right now seems to prioritize big tire clearance, so in that sense this bike is going to be hamstrung a bit by the tire clearance issue.

@JackWatts

Thank you for your clear statement, and especially for all the testing and checks you did with various tires.
I've also tried the G-One RS, R Pro, and Pathfinder on the rear wheel, reporting the results back to Evolve each time.

I have absolutely nothing to add to your conclusion—it matches my current experience exactly. I'm going to race the Cima GR, but for multi-day tours, I'll stick to my other gravel bike.

What's left is a slight disappointment with a bit of a bitter aftertaste. Sure, it would have been great to mount a Dubnital depending on the situation, but it is what it is now. You take on a little bit of risk when buying online and factory-direct from China.

Plus, this is Evolve's first gravel bike, and I'm sure they'll take our feedback seriously and incorporate it into future developments. Last but not least, they've already updated the tire recommendation on their website:

I don't have a G-One RS and was wondering specially about that tire--how is clearance on it?

I'm considering trying a 48 Swampero on the rear. I do a ton of very loose, steep climbing, which is why I'm a fan of the RXPro on the rear. This may be a suitable alternative, or I'll just run the 45 RX Pro.

Truth is, I could have returned the frame and gotten something else, so I can't really complain at this point even if I wish it had more clearance. There are so many other positives for me; the geometry, the availability of a -5 setback forward seatpost, the weight (not just the frame but all of the peripheral parts), the fact that it's probably as aero as my Spear road bike, and the really high build quality.  Plus, I can buy a backup frame for the price of a Crux 5 if I wear through the seat stays...

Part of me thinks they should shift the marketing of this to "all-road/gravel" and go all in on a 32" aero gravel bike, because that's where the market is headed, imo.

Yes, that's true—the pros definitely outweigh the cons for me as well. Great geometry, and the bike fits like a glove from the very first moment. I'll mount the G-One RS on the rear again and post a picture in the thread. Here's the current setup with Pathfinder 50s front and rear

I was eagerly await my frame to arrive, i've preordered the moment i could. At the time it said the lead time was 20-30 days, which would be around this time. Now i heard it has been pushed back 3 months:
QuoteThe extended lead time applies to orders placed under our promotional pricing, and the 3-month timeline starts counting from your order date.

We are working hard to resolve the production backlog, and there are multiple factors contributing to the extended schedule including frame production, paint finishing and component coordination.

This is really surprising to me, especially "the orders placed under our promotional pricing" part. Anyone received anything similar?

i may have missed it elsewhere in this thread but have you measured the actual inflated width of the Pathfinder 50's? i'm assuming on your 24 mm internal width rims that they're coming in right at or just a hair under 50 mm?

Ok, the frame arrived, and I built the bike over the weekend. The build quality is premium.

The only thing I could really nitpick is the frame storage cover — it looks a bit cheap, although I understand that this probably has something to do with keeping the weight down.

As for the tire clearance, I'm running a Schwalbe G-One RX Pro 50 mm on the front. On my 32 mm internal-width rims, the tire measures 52 mm wide. As you can see in the photo, there's still plenty of clearance, so it's absolutely fine.

On the rear, I'm running the same tire in the 45 mm size, which measures 47 mm on my rims. I don't think the 50 mm RX Pro would fit back there.

As for the ride feel — it's fantastic. The bike is lively and very responsive for a gravel bike, and surprisingly comfortable at the same time. On my first ride, I did 160 km and felt very comfortable throughout.

So far, I'm really happy with it.

Oh, and the bike is ready to ride, including pedals and all the mounts, and weighs exactly 8.0 kg with the Force E1 groupset and power meter.

Bike looks great! Can I ask when did you place your order? I have a deposit in at Panda Podium, but I'm concerned it may be months before it ships.

Here as promised the measured width on 24 mm inner width rims.

Schwalbe G-One RX 49.9mm with 1.9 bar
Schwalbe G-One RS 49.9 mm with 1.9 bar

Specialized Pathfinder 48.1 mm with 1.8 bar
Specialized Tracer 48.1 mm with 1.8 bar

The Schwalbes are older ones with some km.
The Specialized are new with 25 km only.

Pictures enclosed.

I receive a mail today about other delays about this frame (6/8 months).
I'm a little disappointed, is too much and I ask for a refund (so I'll start evaluating other gravel maybe aero frame ) :( uffff

"From what I've learned on Chinese social media, Evolve's original manufacturer stopped working with them because their order volume was too low. They're now looking for a new factory."

Size L build update – tyre clearance with 45C on a 28 mm internal rim

Frame arrived last week (Sailfish Pearl, size L – deposit 11 Aug, ordered 25 Sept, delivered ~3 weeks after shipping).

Measured weights (own scale):
– Frame L: 1'008 g (incl. bolts and downtube protection)
– Fork: 397 g
– Seatpost 380 × −5: 159 g
– KREUZA Apex GR 410 × 90: 326 g

Tyre clearance:
– Rim: Elitewheels Drive G42, 28 mm internal
– Tyre: Continental Terra Competition Race 45C, tubeless → 45.9 mm measured
– Seat stay: 9.5 mm · Seat tube: 11.1 mm · Chainstay: 9.9 mm · Fork: 8.1 mm

So the 45C has plenty of room. Based on the tread-cap reports above, I won't try a 50 at the rear.

Videos if anyone wants to see the details:

Part 1 – Unboxing & weights: https://youtu.be/9Ur1Bhpkzr4

Part 2 – Tyre clearance: https://youtu.be/G30ugfBe0_k

Full build with SRAM RED XPLR AXS 1×13 coming next.
