I also got the new alloy stem
Everything fits great, routing is much easier than the previous carbon one 😛

But how many NM to put on the stem bolt (for clamping the steerer tube)?
I seems it needs lots of torque to not slip?

Those risers looks amazing.

Another question: did you cut the basebar handles a bit shorter? they look not as long as others?
Does anyone have experience with cutting these bars? would it be safe to cut them a bit shorter? I think that would improve handeling (especially using RideRever Trivia brakes, that only extend outwards)

I also broke my top piece (of the carbon stem) two times.. third one I received, it works fine.. but now I still keep being skeptical :)
If the Alloy stem would be better.. I am tempted to order one separately if that would be possible.

I went to the website and indeed it says that.. I am looking forward seeing it Kelvin.


I am still struggling with the flex in the handlebar.. I get that the flex in the handlebars give more comfort.. but it is a little too much for my liking. Especially when cracking already two stems (the one now is holding just fine), I have some trust issues :) 
But after seeing the video of Alex on GCN on his China build with his horrible handlebar flex, mine is all things considered not that bad.
But he listed a flexible steerer tube as the problem (not the handlebars/ stem themselves).

Additionally.. still debating if I want to go through the trouble of cutting the handlebars are bit shorter (the longer the reach/lever, the more flex you have ofcourse).
But then I would have to go through the trouble of bleeding brakes again etc... :)

I also tried a budget build. But I got it to 2.8k at the end. Almost everything secondhand.

Unfortuneatly yes.. the top half of the stem cracked twice for me (they had already send a replacement but that cracked as well.)

Now they shipped a whole new stem (top and bottom). I replaced it this week and now it seems to be fine. It is supposed to be an improved design (although i can tell them apart).
I am very scared to tighten them. I only went to 3.6NM but that seems to do the job. No crack this time.

Edit: I have to say.. they responded very friendly to all my (irritated  8)) messages. They kept replying to find solutions to the problem and kept shipping them out to me for free. So overall for the service a big thumbs up!

Happened to me twice now with the Velobuild custom stem..
Saw a crack developing on the clam of the top stem cover. Reached out and immediatly and was send over a new top cover.
Happily switching the stem covers.. but cracked immediatly under low torque again (2nm or so..)

Reached out again and the response was: we changed the mould to increase strength (can only imagine it happens frequently), we'll send out the new version soon
Now waiting for the new version to arrive.


I am also looking now at alloy stems in case I don't get on with this system.. any suggestions? (needs to be very low stack because the steerer tube has already been cut very short)

I was totally up to tinkering and solving all these tiny issues - as i completely expected from a Chinese frame.

The stuff that challenged me most was also the cockpit.. bars slipped on the first ride (because I "too carefully" torqued them up).
Now with greater torque, everthing seems fine.
Coincidentally, I asked a couple of hours ago to VB for the max torque just to be sure. I will edit it in the post later when they reply =)
Edit: they responded that the max torque is 5NM

I actually never build a bike up before.. but it was surprisingly more straight forwards than expected.
Also had to cut the fork by myself.. but with care that was easily enough.
But.. for sure.. specific torque settings would have given me more confidence in the build stage and test rides :)

Great to hear! Did my first outdoor ride on the bike today.. handlebars slipped and indeed pinched the brake ducts.
Got back home safely, redid the cockpit, and torqued to 4NM.. everything seems to be ok now.

Just another thing: are you handlebars also 'super' flexy? If I'm in the aero position, the flex is not noticeable. But if i hold the bars at the brakes, the flex is super noticeable. Especially when putting power down after corners
I would suspect that the carbon was super stiff.. but apparantly not :)

I tried routing the brake ducts from caliper to levers.. but I think the ducts are 'pinched' and the bars don't really turn freely. Just a tad of resistance at the a specific turn angle, probably because of a lack in slack or something. So that approach actually makes sense to me now. Probably ensures better slack and tension at the right places.
