Consider that most of the aerodynamic drag comes from your body and a small percentage from the bike. Let's not get caught up in doubt. Consider that just by wearing an aero sock (at 45 kph if I'm not mistaken) you save something like 8W. I assure you that the fork profile doesn't have much of an impact :)

Thanks, but thanks kinda the point, aero stuff does make such a difference, so it would suck to be riding something inefficient that can be relatively easily upgraded. I see from the (lack of) comments that I may be in the minority on this one  ;D So I'll leave it.

Does anyone else think the profile on our front forks doesn’t look very aero? The leading edge is a bit blocky and there’s no appreciable camtail on the back. I come from an aero bike and ride TT so this is noticeable to me 🤔

Looking at SL8 images, the forks seem a bit more aero and I wonder if an aero retro fit is an option or whether I should just leave it and enjoy riding the bike 😂

Set up complete and she rides like a dream! I needed to file the carbon where the rear brake calliper sits, so it mounts flat and properly. We could argue this would've be better done by SPC, but on balance I'm very happy with the frame and quality of finish. If a bit of filing to make it perfect and allows me to get this bike at the price I did, I can live with that. Brake performance is great BTW and I had no issues of the install, set up and bleeding of the Wheeltop brakes other than the rear calliper issue described above.

Similarly the Wheeltop EDS gears are just fantastic! They do take some setting up, so unless you're technical (read geek!), or know a good & patient mechanic, I'm not sure I can completely recommend them on this basis. But I love them! Shifting performance on the 12 speed Ztto lightweight 11-36 is superb (52/36 rings, waxed KMC chain), better than my old Shimano Ultegra 6870. Quality and materials are fantastic, and they're programmable to 13 & 14 speed, so future proofed. This and they're fully wireless, so no annoying battery to mount or different leads and junctions, made them a winner for me.

The Lexon 165mm cranks and Xcadey PM are great! The PM tracked my Elite turbo perfectly, which is matched to the Garmin Vector 3 pedals on my TT bike, so they're all talking the same language / numbers. Love my Ryet 3D printed saddle, very comfortable, Ryet Ultimate wheels great too and look and handle superbly with the Michelin 28mm tyres. She came in at 6.7kg ex pedals and cages, very respectable for a <£3000, 2x12 hydraulic with PM & 28mm tyres I thought.

You can add a kg to that in 'endurance mode' as per the below picture with pedals, cages, tools, bags and bottles etc. Which I think also blunt the pureness of her aesthetic, but this can't really be avoided.

I'm off to France on her soon to do the Alpe d'Huez challenge, so there's going to be a few hill repeat sessions between now and then!  8)

The RideNow ones are OK, I've used a number of those. Avoid Gustavo, I got some cheap on Aliexpress and have had 2 from 2 failures

Large 56cm, gloss gel coat over raw carbon, 2x12 fully wireless Wheeltop EDS TX, Lexon cranks, Xcadey PM, Ryet wheels & saddle, TPU, Michelin 28s. <6.8kg ex pedals and cages.

Rides great! I sorted the fork issues and I'm happy with position and all the kit choices, just need to stop a rub on the rear brake disc and front mech and she'll be perfect!

well, the parts order is pretty easy, upper earing then c-ring and then spacers. if you have the Spcycle handlebar mind that the top cap isn't flat (it’s conical) and you need the steering tube being at least 4 or 5mm below the handlebar level. I believe this is your issue on may be the c-ring not fitted properly. I say that just bacause I actually had to cut my fork tube twice, because I ended up a couple of millimeters too long at the first attempt.

Thanks! I cut the tube 4mm below the top. I’m hoping I can reposition the compression bung before I need to recut the steerer. Even using a small spacer will be preferable to this. I think the lower SPC cover / spacer sits directly on top of the bearing. The split ring I received as part of the kit didn’t seem to fit :think

Does anyone have a diagram or picture of the fork, headset and stem bearing layout? I'm pretty close to finishing the build and I set the brakes up yesterday. Which highlighted some lateral movement in the assembly when the front brake is on.

So I just want to double check I have it all the right order and haven't missed anything. I cut the steerer to what I thought was the right length, the compression bung top cap fits flush. But if the steerer is over long or even just on the right length, it wouldn't give anywhere for the compression bung to go so it wouldn't compress the whole assembly down and make it tight.

I hope this is not the case, as if I need to trim the steer again, the whole lot, inc brake lines will need to come out! I am running the SPC integrated bar and stem BTW with 35mm total of spacers inc the top and bottom pieces, thanks!

Hey everyone, long time lurker, first time posting. I’ve been between this R088 frame and a Tantan x68 for awhile now for my first Chinese carbon build. I was about to pull the trigger on the R088 from ali express because there’s a good sale going on right now that brings the cost to right around $600 shipped (about $200 less than the x68). Unit I saw the latest video from GCNTech with the dude who built up the R088 and shows a crazy amount of front end flex. He’s using a toseek integrated handlebar and to me it looks like a lot of the flex is just in the handlebar, but it’s hard to tell. I’m hoping if anyone who’s built up a
A few pages back some people were concerned about exactly the same thing. While I can't say for sure how noodly the frame is while riding outside, I am pretty confident that the flex shown in the video looked exaggerated, probably, as you mentioned, due to a lot of flex in the handlebars. I have done a similar test on my SP-R088 with HBR17 handlebars, and it doesn't look worrying to me at all (and definitely not as pronounced). Another person made a video a while back which also showed minimal flex.

There was also some top tube flex reported at the beginning of the thread; I am experiencing none of it. When I squeeze the seat stays, however, they appear more flexible with SP-R088 than on my other carbon bike (Velobuild VB-R-177).

I will report once I ride the bike outside, but inside, on the trainer, the frame itself has appeared solid.


Just check my frame and there’s nothing like the flex he was getting. GCN is sponsored by the ‘mainstream brands’ that builds like this undercut (Orbea & Pinerello etc). It appears the whole project is a scaremongering effort! What do others think that have completed builds and are riding their R088s?

The upper bearing that comes with the frame is too low. At least that was the case for me. At my local service shop they had to replace it with a different bearing and also use a higher C-ring, because the fork was rubbing against the frame in the area under the headset spacers. That’s how it was in my case.

Mine fitted together with no issues, perhaps it’s been sorted since you had issues 🤔

What is stand over height ? I am 174cm and wondering if 54 top big.short legs.

76cm just in front of bb & saddle  ;)

179cm and 54 is too small? I have 179cm too and 54 size is okay.

Yup, I have long legs, the 54 only gives me ~8cm seat post insertion, I was not comfortable with that, so I thought the frame could be better used by a slightly shorter rider. I hope that's OK with you?  ;)

My replacement 56cm frame has arrived ;D. So I have my (too small for me unfortunately, 179cm) 54cm (seatpost 48cm), gloss gel coat over raw carbon, 780g frame available for sale, brand new! The frame pic shows what parts you'll get; frame,  forks, seatpost, headset bearings & accessories (replacement 56cm shown), the part built bike pic is the 54cm  ;)

Available in the UK for shipment to UK and Europe. Much quicker than buying direct! I got a great Black Friday deal on this frame and do not wish to mark it up, so can sell including courier for £490 (UK, Europe freight TBC)

I’m really pleased with how the build is progressing. No major issues. I’m glad I kept the 54cm frame so I can carry on with the build while the 56cm is on its way. It means I’ll have the 54cm to sell locally, or on this forum in a month or so. Current weight 6.4kg, but that excludes brake calipers, front mech and bar tape 👌👍😊

After starting my build my impressions are this is an excellent frame! Nice engineering and very light. But I think I have got my sizing wrong and I’m talking to SPC about a replacement 56cm. The extra 20mm seat tube will help with a similar addition to reach, which I can cope with. Thinking the 58cm is too big with 35mm more reach. I’ll sell on the 54cm rather than send it back 🤔

Initial impressions of the 380/100 bar combo is it’s a lightweight, attractive unit with well thought out spacers and cable routing, but I’m finding the position a bit weird. I’ll try it out in the turbo and see if I can get used to it 🤞
