This just rocked up. I won’t likely have a chance to get it built up until the weekend, but first impressions are very very positive:

- Nothing needs facing, and the threads in the BB shell are perfect and don’t need a reap
- Overall the frame feels incredibly robust. Pinching the downtube as hard as I can, there’s no flex or depression (unlike an ER:One). This may not ultimately mean anything as medial stiffness is not what makes a frame stiff, but it does inspire confidence in its durability (unlike the ER:One, which cracked itself)
- Paint and decals are very well done and look premium
- I also got Peter’s riser bars and these are as stiff as they come. The quality of the build on them is also very high.

If I wasn’t on new Dad duty every night I’d have this thing built yesterday.

Do you mind sharing the reason why the QuickPro cracked? XMCS downtube does not flex as much as the QuickPro because it has an internal ridge to make it torsionally stiffer and more robust. Explained here by Hambini https://www.youtube.com/shorts/cZ6GjRGhaFg

I would have happily purchased the XMCS instead of the ER:One, but in terms of aesthetics there's something in the VRT that I don't like. It is not something specific, it is more something like the overall proportions of tube shapes, ratios and angles (but it is a highly subjective opinion)

Thank you Sander, very detailed reply...especially useful since you have tested so many wheels.

After thinking about tire width, I would not run anything narrower than 32mm WAM today and in the future. There is simply no real reason to go back, because going from a 32mm (nominal width) Michelin Pro 5 TLR (the tire I use now) to a 30mm only saves about 25g, and going down to 28mm (nominal) only saves another 25g (meaning 100g for the wheelset if switching both tires from 32 nominal to 28 nominal). Nominal 28mm (on something like 21-23mm IW) is what I would run if I was looking for a superlight wheelset, but with 24-25mm IW I suppose that the minimum is a nominal 30mm, at that point no reason not to go for a nominal 32mm since it rolls better on bad surface, it is more comfortable, there is no aero penalty, it has more grip...the only real downside is a 50g penalty (absolutely negligible).

What I cannot understand from all the technical data available online is how smooth the transition between the tire and the rim is for each of these wheels, as far as I know this is the new topic in this tire/rim optimization problem.

what is the general feedback on R280 hubs from XMCS ? I am especially interested in reliability and durability. Are they in the same category as HWorks SR261 for instance ?

Same as above, Serenade would be a good shout and should be able to do a 28-spoke build, I believe. Serenades rim catalogue attached they have 23mm inner 60mm

I also know that Zen are using the H-Works SR308, which is as a gravel-specific hub, but there's obviously no reason why it can't be used in a road wheel build as well.

Ask then if they can do 24/28 as they sell individual wheels they maybe able to do 24/28 hubs

Alright, so I studied many possible combinations for this new wheelset since it is going to be installed on my new QuickPro ER:One. For me it is absolutely mandatory to use steel spokes: they just make more sense for a wheelset that needs to be reliable and for easier maintenance at home (truing, etc.). I started with the idea of having 24/28 spokes, but the market is overwhelmingly focused on 24/24 or 21/24 for road wheelset. I guess that is enough, my weight is 81 kg, FTP around 280-290W, I do not race, some sprint just for fun but I cannot push more than 1300W anyway.

Overall system weight: 81 kg (me), 8 kg (bike), 3 kg maybe for everything else (water, food, tools, clothing, etc.). Total 92kg, that leaves me a significant margin for any wheel rated to 120 kg max weight. I would not go for 110 kg since I might do some road bikepacking, so the overall system weight might rise to 100-105 kg.

The highest stress that these wheels are going to experience will be potholes and road bumps to limit cars speed; road surface is extremely variable here in northern Italy, it constantly alternates between relativey smooth to terrible, easily comparable with cobbled roads in Belgium (I rode Flanders cyclosportive in 2023 and some cobbled sectors were smoother than some roads at home). Sometimes the road surface becomes full of bumps and potholes while you are riding at 45-55 km\h on a false flat at the end of a descent, but you cannot move to the center of the road (better tarmac) because there's traffic. Those situations are very bad, very dangerous and you absolutely need wheels that can withstand that kind of multiple high energy impact, a situation that sometimes goes on for 30-60 seconds before you can finally move somewhere else on the road. Associate all this with very, very long alpine descents (we are talking 20+ km) where you constantly accelerate to 60-70 km\h and brake to 20 km\h for hairpins.

24/24 or 21/24 steel spokes with deep carbon rims should be enough to withstand this kind of stress, also due to the fact that I run 30/32mm tires (current front tire measures 31mm WAM and rear 33mm WAM) and that deep carbon rims should be strong enough when chosen in a non-ultralight layup.

another important requirement is the rim depth: 55mm minimum since these are going to be used with a QuickPro ER:One, so I want something that is consistent with the aero look of the frame.

keeping all these things in mind, I have narrowed down my options mainly because nowadays most brands only offer carbon spokes (that I don't want). here is my list:

1) Elite Drive SL 58D SS - final price 880€ - depth 58mm - IW 25mm - EW 36mm front / 34mm rear - proprietary Elite hubs - weight 1451g - 60T ratchet - Sapim CX Ray - alloy nipples - 120 kg max weight - 24 2x rear - 21 front with radial lacing on NDS
Pros: quick buy, the brand is now getting some presence in western market (I am talking shops like Mantel, Ridewill, etc.) and western press, so probably easier to sell
Cons: I'd prefer silver hubs and spokes (they match better with the frame that has silver/holographic logo), I'd prefer brass nipples for durability, EW very wide especially in the front (33-34mm WAM tire almost mandatory), semi-matte finish (I'd prefer glossy), 21 spokes in front wheel with radial lacing on NDS does not sound too robust (it is a well accepted theory that radial lacing should not be used in disc brake wheels)

2) Zen Vaporlite II - final price 730€ - depth 60mm - IW 25mm - EW 36mm - ZC261 silver hubs (same as H-Works SR261) - weight 1440g (on-paper approximation, real weight may be different) - 54T ratchet - Silver CX Ray - brass nipples - 120 kg max weight - 24/24 spokes with 2x lacing
Pros: cheaper, silver hubs and spokes, brass nipples, I can get glossy finish, 24/24 spokes with better lacing pattern in my opinion
Cons: much less known brand, no idea about hub quality and reliability, EW 36mm means 33-34mm WAM tire almost mandatory

3) Zen MR55 - final price 780€ - depth 55mm - IW 25mm - EW 31.4mm - ZC261 silver hubs (same as H-Works SR261) - weight 1280g (on-paper approximation, real weight may be different) - 54T ratchet - Silver CX Ray - brass nipples - 130 kg max weight - 24/24 spokes with 2x lacing
Pros: price, silver hubs and spokes, brass nipples, I can get glossy finish, 24/24 spokes with better lacing pattern in my opinion, much lower weight, 130 kg max weight, narrower EW means I can still use 30-31mm WAM tires if I want to do that
Cons: MR rims have moulded spoke holes instead of drilled spoke holes. As far as I understand, this results in less material needed, less rim weight and probably better compaction of carbon layers around the nipple hole. However, I have no idea about the maturity level of this technology (e.g., achieving very good compaction of carbon around the nipple holes).

4) XMCS T1100 wheels - final price 730€ - depth 60mm - IW 24mm - EW 32.9mm - proprietary R280 hubs - weight unknown - 54T ratchet - Sapim CX Ray - alloy nipples - 120kg max weight - 24/24 spokes with 2x lacing
Pros: price, can probably get silver hubs, silver spokes and brass nipples, can get glossy finish, probably the best tradeoff for IW/EW combo among all these wheels, 24/24 spokes with better lacing pattern in my opinion
Cons: no idea about hub quality and durability, weight is about 1265g for 50mm version so 60mm version with brass nipples will probably be around 1400g (heavier than MR55 but not that much)

If XMCS can meet my requirement at 730€ (in terms of silver hubs and spokes, brass nipples), I think that it might be the most reasonable choice. I am very curious about the MR55 rims, but I feel like XMCS is just a more "tried-and-tested" brand/factory at the moment.

And at 2000$+, i’d ratage hunt bargain opportunities at year end sales with Scott, look and others that will have much greater resale value

That depends on how frequently you plan to change the bike. Moreover, Scott Foil for instance is out of the question because of limited tire clearance.
There are some Madone frameset for sale at very interesting prices, as well as Giant Propel framesets, but that is still like 600 to 1000€ more than a Quick Pro Er:One (I am including the handlebar for the Quick Pro).

I am not sure at all that the price difference will be that big when selling the bike, especially for people that will keep the bike for at least 3-4 years.

@ZenCarbonBike do you have any picture of any of your wheels built with silver hubs and CX-Ray silver spokes ?

I am currently looking at wheelsets for my new QuickPro ER:One and I think that silver hubs/spokes would perfectly match the raw carbon look of the frame, especially with that kind of quickpro decal on the frame

These are new wheels, has about 60 miles on them.  After the first ride I checked the wheels and found this wobble, it's on the front wheel only and the rear appears to be fine.  What's odd is the wheel is still true, and the spokes tension is still even and consistent, only the inner part of the wheel has this wobble.

I spoke to Peter and he said it's normal.  He mentioned because of the ultralight carbon layup, the spokes can pull and deform the carbon to make this wobble.

Wheel model is
D58CU-33 26mm IW T1100 with HS606 hubs and 3.2mm carbon spokes.  Weight is 1165g.

System weight is about 75kg.

You guys have any thoughts on this and does anyone else have this issue on their wheel??

Also, why doesn't the rear wheel have this issue as well?

Peter told me to post in the forum as others have mentioned this? where?

I have the same problem on the rear wheel, but mines are from Light Bicycle. So I guess there might be some truth in Peter's words.

Has anyone found some that aren't a million pounds.

Quite a few on aliexpress now around £25 per axel but I can't find the correct spec.

what's the weight of the stock thru axles?

Despite everyone going for sub 1kg wheelset with carbon spokes, I need help finding a wheelset with these specs:

- 65 mm profile (60mm also acceptable)
- 24/28 spokes (24/24 if it is really impossible to find 24/28)
- 23 to 24 mm internal width (no 25mm and above)
- CX Ray spokes (no carbon spokes)

The closest I can get, apparently, is a set from XMCS with 65mm rims, 24mm IW, 24/24 cx ray.

So our local bike shops are selling quick pro:er one, now I am thinking if I would just buy this or wait for XMCS Vrt…

It depends on what you consider more important. I decided for the Quick Pro because it is a much more established brand when it comes to producing and selling frames, there are many positive reviews and the company in general seems solid. Moreover, the fact that many teams, including Euskaltel, are using their bikes demonstrates that they are, at the very least, comparable in terms of reliability and performance to racing bikes sold by western brands.

XMCS, on the other hand, is much more established in terms of wheels, but not as much in terms of frames. The first VRT frames are being shipped right now, the sample size of information that can be found online is extremely small (N=1, Patrick Lino's YT channel), so I just decided to go for the more tried and tested alternative.

Moreover, I prefer the look of the ER:One over the VRT, in my opinion the proportions of the VRT frame, in some area, could be modified to improve the appearance (but this could impact weight, stiffness and aerodynamics if not done properly).

Long story short: I believe they are both fantastic frames and that the differences among them are extremely small in a real use case scenario for amateurs pushing around 150W to 250W (average) per ride (provided that the geometry is ok in both cases).
At the moment the ER:One is a much more tried and tested option, the brand is getting gradually more recognized in the western market and their online presence is more similar to those of western brands. The VRT, for the moment, is a much more niche product confined to a bunch of people reading specialized forums and looking for chinese aero frames on Youtube. I do not doubt the technical qualities of the frame, especially since XMCS gives the customers 5 year warranty, but I would be much more inclined to buy the frame after 12-18 months of it being actually available on the market and extensively used...kind of like what happened to Quick Pro ER:One. 

Despite choosing Quick Pro over XMCS for the frame, I am leaning towards XMCS for the wheels. I have not found, at the moment, a comparable wheelset in terms of specs and price for a 60 or 65mm profile, 23 to 25mm IW and CX-Ray spokes.

Would also be interested in hearing how to use a traditional stem/bar combo to test out stem length.

And i just cant decide whether i should go for an ER:One or wait for something with a higher stack (like Tavelo Arden) at the moment i got a canyon ultimate in S (390 Reach, 539 stack, 90mm stem) and i would like to have more reach and more stack…so i would need to have maybe some spacer plus riser cockpit on the Er:One due to its Stack being so low :/

this is an image I found on WW forum. it looks like it is possible to install a normal round spacer on top of the original spacers, so that there is enough room to fit a normal stem. it does not look that bad.
in my case, I would do this while waiting for the HBR20 handlebar from Lightcarbon
