Component Deals & Selection / Re: Bike lights
« on: October 15, 2014, 10:20:26 AM »
I have both styles of light. Prob have bought 5 sets of lights, mostly to get more batteries, as the quality can be hit and miss..!!

They have cost generally AU$30-70 each over the last 4 years or so..

Both styles give incredibly good output, even if the official claims are misleading. Run the dual led on the helmet, and a single on the bars. We need plenty of light for the trails that we ride at night!! :o

I would really like to get a couple of GOOD quality battery packs, for reassurance. As it stands, if the ride is remote(far North Queensland, Australia type remote..)then 2, or 3 batteries in total to bring(just in case, you know!)

The lights themselves are good, but I find over time that the actual switch becomes difficult to operate. I have a few good ones, and a couple of not so good ones.

I think the main bikes sold in the 26" size are long travel.
My brother has many bikes...all 29" except his 'jump' bike, a Specialized Enduro, which is a 26"

This../\/\/\.

I have a 29er hardtail for xc races, and a SWorks Enduro for the fun trails.. ;D

If I was to look at a new bike as a replacement, then it would prob end up being a 650B. For no other reason as that there will be more options in that wheel size in the next couple of years.

I have just replaced the fork on the enduro, and am getting a wheelset built for it, so it realistically wont be going anywhere soon!

We copied Specialized design.

Good choice.

Hey Peter, do you guys plan on imitating any of the specialized frames? Possibly some of the more all mountain full suspension designs such as the Enduro? Seems there is plenty of market demand for those types of frames - I'd personally be interested in one.

Component Deals & Selection / Re: novatec hubs from iplay

Funny i should come across this!

I have a set of 29er wheels built by them with the novatec hubs too. I have pulled them apart to put fresh grease, etc in them a few times, and this time, the hubs were 'notchy".. the bearings were worn out.

When I pulled it apart this time, it became quite apparent that the freehub had cracked under the pawls in the same spot. 3 cracks and its curtains for that freehub!

I found a replacement on eBay made of steel. Extra strong, this one! http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/271623664681?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

They are a good hub for the price.. ;)

SO, does anyone else ride a 26 inch bike anymore?

 I do. ;D

A new set of rims are coming in the next couple of weeks.

They are to use the existing hubs on the bike ATM.

Roval hubs with DT Swiss internals and a 20mm Roval on the front.

After The Ride / Re: What kind of riding do you do?
« on: September 08, 2014, 06:07:30 AM »
I ride pretty much exclusively off road. Singletrack, XC, AM, DH all on the one bike.Commute to work on the hartdail when feeling the need. The XC trails and endurance events are ridden on a 29er hardtail, and everything else is ridden on a 2012 S Works Enduro. 160mm travel beast..weighs about 13.5 KG, depending on tyre selection.

I have been riding Enduro or AM bikes pretty much since I started proper MTB in around 2003/2004, without using marketing terms to describe the way I ride.! Long travel bike, 150-160mm travel with a travel adjust fork. Been using a dropper post for about 4 years now. Such a great addition to the bike. Used the one bike for XC races (RRR in far north QLD, if anyone is wondering) and Dawn til Dusk DH on the Gravitate MTB festival also( about 8 good DH Runs in Cairns which are pretty extreme),

And here is a 26er.. You do remember when 26 inch wheels were available, right? LOL..

This was at least 5 years ago.. The pic was taken just after it was built, so a few things to tidy up..

Mud Cows. The original extreme lifestyle/riding vid.

These were filmed in the early 90s all along the east coast of Australia.. Most of it was in and around Cairns, where the WC was held in April this year. There is some footage in there of Chris Kovarik jumping the Kuranda Scenic Railway Train, and missing the catch net, nicely breaking his collarbone. His sponsors were not too happy.

Be prepared for poor quality recordings and blood.

This is where Crusty Demons of Dirt got their inspiration from..True!

Carbon hub?

Seen these.. http://www.kappiuscomponents.com/

I would love to get a rear hub, just for the noise !!

The Small Block 8s are a underrated tyre... I used the 26 x 2.35 for a couple of 100kl events, and when used on the right surface, they are great.. Really high levels of grip. Not too good in mud however !!  ::)

Component Deals & Selection / Re: UST tyres
« on: June 27, 2014, 12:51:07 AM »
I have done ghetto tubeless(using a tube), true UST rims, and taping rims.

The UST rims have a pronounced bead lock on the inside of the rim to "lock' the tyre into place. Standard style rims worked ok with a 20"tube slit lengthways to seal the tyre/rim interface.

I now have a set of carbon 29er rims using gorilla tape(that is the brand name) to make them tubeless. Best solution I have used..

Now tyres...

UST designated tyres need to use a specific bead design to be classified as UST. Most people are using tubeless ready tyres, which are lighter than UST tyres and NEED sealant. UST specific tyres DO NOT NEED TO USE SEALANT, but I would always recommend using sealant, not to assist with the inflation and air holding capabilities, but to seal punctures when they occur. Light weight tyres dont seem to have the sidewall support when going tubeless and using low pressures, as the light weight is achieved by using a high TPI count, and less rubber.

There are too many choices! I like the WTB tyres, as they are a large volume tyre with a reasonably low weight. The Specialized tyres are also very good. Maxxis is always a favourite too.
