Seatpost delaminating on IP-256-sl
« on: October 12, 2015, 02:44:33 PM »
Hi guys,
I was wondering what you think? I noticed some creaking around the seatpost on my IP-256-sl and while cleaning it I noticed there seems to be some cracks. I think its harmless but still concerning, what are your thoughts?

Thanks

I don't see anything too terrible from those photos. I have an older Scott Scale frame that did something similar and it still works. I'd say clean that area up, apply some carbon grip compound, and reassemble. See what happens.

Thanks cmh, just to clarify, I'm speaking about the region below where the seatpost clamp sits on both sides of the slit.

Initial reaction is that I wouldn't worry about it all too much. But I guess you never know. I'd probably just keep a close eye on it and take action if it progresses. But if you can't fix the creaking noise then it would probably start to bother me if it were my bike. Even though it doesn't really seem like that would cause the creaking noise, but who knows.

Have you tried other solutions to get rid of the creak? Carbon paste? Double checked that collar, post, tube are the proper sizes (it's seems to be a fairly common oversight/mistake)? Did you tighten with torque wrench?

Thanks Sitar_Ned for the response and photo upload. I tried using chintertown's upload system but was receiving an error. I don't think the noise was actually coming from this crack itself but the noise lead me to investigate more. With the seatpost installed and the seat clamp on its almost impossible to see.

I cleaned the seatpost and the area on the bike frame, applied park tools carbon assembly paste and its been silent since, albeit one ride. I'm going to put a couple dabs of super glue on the cracks just to seal them up and continue to watch them. Hopefully they don't get any bigger.

Thanks again.

Yeah, If you eliminated the creaking I honestly wouldn't worry about it at all. I'd just do exactly as you said.. hit it with some super glue and keep an eye on it.

For future reference, just use Imgur.com to upload pics. It's really the best option. Instructions at the bottom of this thread: http://chinertown.com/index.php/topic,196.0.html

Glad to hear you got your issue resolved.

Oh, wow, yeah, okay, I had missed that crack. Agreed with Sitar's advice, but definitely keep a close eye on it.
