ACR stem alternatives
« on: March 23, 2022, 08:00:53 AM »
Whilst building up a VBR 086 I had the chance to get a Orro Venturi which has waylaid me for a mo.. .
The Venturi uses ACR stem and came with 100mm which I need to switch out to 80mm to achieve my fit. Sadly an ACR in 80mm appears to be as common as unicorn poop in Europe for he foreseeable future.
Does anyone have any suggestions for alternative stems that might be a good swap out whilst maintaining the routing and that clean look?
Cheers!

FSA sells a "non series" ACR stem that's available in 80mm if you look hard enough:

https://www.fsaproshop.com/products/non-series-acr-stem
https://www.bike-discount.de/de/fsa-non-series-acr-60-vorbau

However, speaking from my own personal experience, I recommend looking for a frame with a shorter reach. An 80mm stem on a road bike will result in twitchy handling.

With my body type (long lower body, short upper body, no flexibility), I need the stack of an XL frame combined with the reach of an XS frame. Pretty much my only drop-bar option is to go for a gravel frame, use a 90mm stem and flip it. That achieves my fit, but it's already quite twitchy. Definitely not fun in crosswinds.

Thanks for replying. I had found the non series ACR stem but its out of stock in 80mm everywhere, including those sites you shared. Thats why I started thinking about whether to swap it out for something else. Although its not a "chiner" build problem I thought that it was worth asking the forum as there are a lot of people used to getting around build challenges.

I've been running an 80mm on my existing Canyon 54cm and its been ok. Not as stable as the 100mm I was running I accept, but certainly good enough. Its certainly been a reasonable trade off for the extra comfort that it brings  :)

Have you looked at any of the gravel frames with HTA less than 70?  That should allow a shorter stem and still be very stable.

@wfl3: Can you recommend any? Pretty much all frames I come across don't have enough stack for me (and that's already taking into account 4cm of spacers). I'm currently looking at flat-bar options (that aren't hard tail MTB, as I prefer a large frame triangle, and rigid fork).

Fezarri Shafer & Evil Chamois Hagar are two I know of.
