Suggestions on a; 165mm, 30-46t Cranksets with BSA Bracket
« on: November 17, 2022, 01:51:54 PM »
I got tired of waiting on L-Twoo or Sensah to release their hydraulic groupset and ordered a take off Shimano 105 11 speed groupset today for a steal to mount on my gravel bike (Kona Rove).

Unfortunately, The crank arms on this groupset are 175mm and I prefer 165mm.   So I'll be selling off the crankset (Crankset: FSA Gossamer 386 (BB included), 175m crank length, 48/32T BCD, 110mm if anyone is interested)  When it arrives and looking for a BSA BB, 165mm 30-46t crankset.  My gravel bike is currently running an old square spindle set up and want to update that bit.

Anyone come across any good looking options on AliExpress lately?

Thanks in advance!

I've got a ZRACE 165mm crank/BSA BB, Sigeyi PM with 110mm BCD (or they come with a 3-bolt to 110bcd adapter), and 46/30t chainrings from ebay (has to be special kind that has threaded portion on inner chainring, to fit a 30t with 110bcd.  So far around 650 miles with no issues.

Good. The used 105 will run rings around Sensah or LTwoo groupset anyhow.

One big selling point on it, my decade old Trek roadbike hasn't had a single hiccup in a decade using 5600 series 105.

Good to hear on the ZRace.  I'll check out what's available.

I've been staring at this crankset for awhile; Senicx PR3  https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256804615021106.html?spm=a2g0o.cart.0.0.311638da22FS3Q&mp=1&gatewayAdapt=glo2usa&_randl_shipto=US

Would be nice if it were easy to find some of this stuff on Amazon.  Cheap cranksets seem nearly impossible to find anywhere outside of AliEx.

Good find!  I don’t have any real preference on 24 or 30 spindles. No idea if I’d ever even notice the difference.  My mtn bike has 30 and my road bike has a 24.

Since my gravel bike (old Kona Rove) has a square bottom bracket in it right now the spindle type isn’t much of a concern, just needs to use a BSA threaded bb that fits.

According to the description it's alloy:
» Spindel :Ø29mm Alloy Spindle

I was asking about the 24mm one the OP mentioned. Its says 24mm but does not say what material in the description.

Shimano 24mm spindle is steel. The 24mm alloy spindles have had some failures. Might not be a concern if you're a light rider or don't do massive sprint/climb efforts.

I’m a whopping 125lbs and they only thing I’m good at is out climbing or riding farther than my buddies.  Speed/sprinting is NOT my strong suit.

46x30 chainrings that fit shimano 5800-9100 crank arms are sold by bikingreen on eBay. I have these chainrings. The seller was awesome and got it to me fast for a gravel race. They use bolts that are smaller so that a 30 ring will fit the crank arms.

Stone sells 46-32 for shimano 5800-9100 on aliexpress. These use the standard bolts to hold the rings to the crank arms and why it can only do a 32 ring.

Senicx sell 46x30 gxp chainrings that fit most crank arms sold on aliexpress.

As for crankarms I've had no issues using the aluminum spindles cranks. My weight varies from 130-140. I have also been using the lighter hollow crank arms.  I've used these in one gravel race.

Most of my gravel rides are done on my shimano cranks.  Just peace of mind when you're In The middle of nowhere and beating the crap out of the bike weekly.

Got my AliExpress order last week.

Very fast shipping from China!

The SENICX PR2 crank seems really nice and light.  Installed zero hassle and spins nice and true.

Other items I ordered are nice as well.

Have put a few hours in on the trainer stand so far,  will get out for 70-80 mile ride this weekend.  I’m expecting that all is well with the Senicx crank though.

*UPDATE*

I have a little over 700 miles on the Senicx PR2, 165mm, 46/30 crankset right now.  The bike gets ridden for 3/4 - 1 hour sessions per week on the trainer stand and another 40-100 mile ride each weekend.

Its been on the road, the bike paths, gravel trails, dirt roads, and mountain bike single track.    I've climbed and descended some very nasty grades with it and even jumped the bike a few times.

Everything is going smoothly, nothing has wiggled loose nor shown any real wear.  No creaking, no notable flex while riding.

I give the thumbs up.  Its pretty dang light and has been shockingly strong so far.  Granted a weigh a whopping 120lbs so even with intentionally beating on the bike i'm not putting much force into things compared to someone of more substantial size.

The crankset is paired to an 11speed hydraulic Shimano 105 drivetrain that was nearly new when the bike (2016 Kona Rova Aluminum) was built in early January.

It'll get another 100 miles or so put on it before I put it through The MidSouth100 on March 10.

Also,  It seems the 3 bolt SRAM chainrings will fit onto this crankset, so I've been searching for chainring mounted powermeters for it.  Just haven't come across any powermeter spiders that will accept a 46/30 setup, in case anyone has a source or knows the special search terms to find them.

Just wondering if you had any luck find a PM that will work with the 46-30 setup? I was looking at getting the PR2 with 46-30 but was also wondering if there are any power meter for it....
