TanTan FM10 BB Delamination - Warranty Claim
« on: September 15, 2022, 12:41:20 PM »
Purchased 12/20. Two Year Warranty.

Major delamination in the bottom bracket with pictures to verify.

So far two days and no response from TanTan to warranty claim email with pictures. I sent a follow-up email a bit ago.

The frame is still listed on AliExpress:

Don't expect much from them.
With Tantan(and many others) everything is fine as long as it's going well.

From the pictures(seen on my mobile) it doesn't look that bad.
I still ride a workswell 062 with a BB in a much worse state than that.
I just put a BB that you screw together from both sides, not a Wmfg but an aliexpress one.

Hard to tell from the pics but it looks more like wear from a poorly fitted BB. Not saying that is your fault, could easily be from a BB shell that is out of tolerance.

If Tantan don't come back to you I'd be inclined the repair with epoxy and then clean up with an appropriately sized flap wheel.  https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/313601527322?chn=ps&_ul=AU&_trkparms=ispr%3D1&amdata=enc%3A1rRFTQTYaRSWquGRrNf_oGg30&norover=1&mkevt=1&mkrid=705-139619-5960-0&mkcid=2&itemid=313601527322&targetid=&device=c&mktype=pla&googleloc=9071653&poi=&campaignid=15984321586&mkgroupid=&rlsatarget=&abcId=9300814&merchantid=419710659&gclid=CjwKCAjwg5uZBhATEiwAhhRLHsMyOGShGPKIrPJDCdJeb9Xi-r0ADOxZr0Syx7vllCy8Po8Ksu9I7RoCR4oQAvD_BwE

Hope you get it sorted.

I used the bottom bracket that came with the frame.

You seem to have missed the rest of that comment.  You know, this part "Not saying that is your fault, could easily be from a BB shell that is out of tolerance."

There's a huge crater / void visible, besides what was presumably later delamination or damage ... given that they let the former through, I'd be inclined to think the latter is due to a shoddy frame.

Edit:  For clarity, see image below.  Likely no resin in that area then when the BB shell was machined all the carbon delaminated and they had to snip and sand it out.   It's massive and the frame probably should have been scrapped.

I was doing a pre-ride suspension check the other day and figured out that it was the main suspension pivot that was making all the noise. So the bottom bracket, even with all the delamination, is silent.

Now I've found that since the BB hole is not round the bearing race gets distorted and causes the bearings to drag and fail prematurely. I've decided to attempt a repair with carbon fiber and epoxy and an adjustable hand reamer. The blades on the reamer are 105mm long so I should be able to ream both sides at once and keep things lined up. The BB92 shell has to be 40.98mm to accommodate the 41mm BB.

How did you go with the repair?

did Tantan ever get back to you?

The carbon fiber bottom bracket repair came out about 95%. I could do it again and get much closer. The holes are very round. I'll post pics sometime.

The Ztto BB ordered as a replacement was a fail because I needed to remove it after a trial install but the internal plastic sleeve covers the bearing race contact point. It has to be destroyed with a screw driver and removed before attempting to remove either side of the BB. Not knowing this I spent about 30 minutes customizing a tool... long story.

The bike is fully assembled and I've ridden it around the neighborhood with no creaking. For now I installed the old SRAM BB that is going bad but good enough to test the carbon fiber repair on a trail or two.

Stay away from TanTan for this and other parts issues.

Nicely done with the repair. With a little patience, carbon is relatively easy to work with. Just can’t rush the process. Also much easier and cheaper to learn than welding.
