MTB Cranks - Suggestions?
« on: November 17, 2023, 08:47:27 AM »
Shorter Cranks are all the rage lately, I'd love to try them without forking out hundreds of USD.

Does anyone have experience with mountain bike cranks on here? I've currently got a DUB BB and want to try either 165 or 160 crank length. I've seen a few threads on here that are somewhat old.

I've found Cruz Bikes and zRace have a few options.

Any comments are helpful.

I ordered a SENICX MTB Mountain Bike Crankset, 165mm with a Dub spindle on the 11.11 sales.

I haven't received it, but if it performs like my Senicx PR2 crankset I've had on my gravel bike for nearly 3000 miles this year then I'll be happy with the purchase.

EDIT --  I received the cranks and installed them.   Finishing and quality seems just as high as my PR2 crankset.  They dropped right in on the bike and when I push on them the bike moves.

I really like the SRAM GX cranks. Inexpensive (I usually get them for about 100 bucks, and I have seen them even cheaper on sales), quite beautiful in my opinion, not very heavy and they last forever and ever.

Been testing less expensive short cranks on my road bikes. My experience so far.

Goldix - needed to clean up the three direct mount points with a dremel to fit my direct mount Sigeyi power meter. The Goldix direct mount chainring was fine, but the direct mount PM and another spider did not fit out of the box. Done over 1000km no issues since then.

Cruz Bikes - shimano style crank attachment, needed to open the right crank arm to attach to crank. Unwilling to use my PM until tested and taken on and off the bike a couple of times. Not actually used yet.

Zrace - after emails with Sigeyi, had to take to crank with dremel, to stop base of left crank arm resting on PM. Not used, but of the three cranks so far, probably the best construction. Not used yet.

I have a Senicx on the way courtesy of 11.11 sale would of also got a Fovno (heard good things about this brand), but was cheaper before 11.11, so waiting.

Depending on how the 160mm Cruz Bike goes, looking at trying a 155 or 160mm Cruz Bike with GXP style mounting for both crank arms https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005890453077.html

These are the ones I landed on as seeming the most legitimate. Good to hear you've had positive experiences on another set of their cranks!

I had a set of the 155mm Cruz bike cranks for over a year now, they've worked and held up great to ss mtbing. The only issue is one of the pedal threads was a little rough, but broke in fine

I stuck a 3* 32t chainring on them and they mounted right up to my 2019 specialized epic carbon without issue. Got a couple hundred miles on them so far and everything is fine.

Goldix chainring I got.

I got some Goldix for my kid’s bike, quality seems good to me. At 5yo he won’t be pushing the boundaries of mechanical resistance though. Which bugs me, if someone was actually designing bike part for kids, they could save 30-40% of the weight because the loads are nothing in comparison to adults… rant over

I have 4 sets of the Cruz cycle cranks. The latest set in 155 may have not have perfectly faced interface with the chainring, or the two chainrings I mounted to it are ever so slightly bent. However, I it functions fine and I have never had any reliability issues across the four sets. One thing to note is they are shimano standard spindles (24 mm) NOT gxp spindles. The spindles are steel so I am not too worried about spindle issues.
