My 256-SL

Thought I'd say hi and put up some info on my 19 inch, 142x12, BB30 256-SL build.

Bought the frame from Peter and his new venture. Great communication and shipped to my door in 1 wk. Packed well and no troubles with the frame so far. Weight with dropouts and water bottle bolts was 1040 gm.

Built it up last weekend and went for a shakedown trail ride on Monday. Everything worked well, Build is XX1 with XTR m980 brakes. Wheels are Roval Control SL with Icon tires. Have a Niner RDO seatpost and an old FSA OS 99 stem with an old Easton EC70 bar. Some parts are from my Orbea Alma that I am retiring. Right now my fork is an older Fox but I have a new CTD with remote lockout coming in the next day or so, I hope to get that on this weekend. I'd like to get some wider bars as the current ones are 68 cm, Wanna try some 72 or 74s on it.

No close up frame pics as it looks like all the others out there. The build was super easy and weight as pictured is under 20 lbs. I'll re-weigh once it's all done.





Anyway, I'll update as I get some more time on this thing. So far I love it.

Top shelf build Andy!  Please let us know how you like those Maxxis Ikon tires, I almost went with those but chose the X-kings instead.

Also, check your Eggbeater pedals, if they are the older model you could have a risk of breakage, I just sent mine into Crank Bros to be updated with new spindle shafts.

Fox's CTD remote lever isn't that great, you can only lock into the Trail mode in one direction of the lever, but it works.  Scott makes a better lever, even for just locking the fork.

Your build weight is very similar to my IP-057, you will really enjoy having such a light nimble carbon bike.  Have fun!

The Alma is a carbon frame too, isn't it? Can I ask why you're retiring only to replace it with another carbon frame? Just curious. Nice build, btw. Those wheels are frkn sweet.

You didn't put any chainstay protector. Like me initially.

Recently I protected about 10cm around the derailleur cable entry.
When the chain is on the 2 smaller sprockets, and on bumpy terrain.
It hits the frame there, and wears it significantly.

Been using the Icons for the past couple years. I love them and they work great on my trails. Not the most grip but they do have a nice predictable slide, fun tire.

These are the newer Eggbeaters and I've broken springs on the older models. Not the most durable but I love them.

Yeah, the lockout is nothing great but I like Fox forks and needed a new one so I thought I'd give it a try.

The Alma has been great but it's getting old and kinda beat. The BB is low and the head tube is steep and tall, wanted to try some different geometry. I was actually buying parts to redo that frame when I got fed up and just ordered this thing.

Was so pretty when new.

Have 3 rides on the bike now - 20 miles, 32 miles, and a 52 miler. The long ride was a killer as I had done a hard 4 hour road ride the day before. Now that I have some miles I've been able to think about what I like about it. The biggest thing I notice/issue is that I find it a smidge harder to get the front end up and over rocks on the trail. Not sure if it's the slacker HA than I'm used to or not. Could just be the whole bike is different enough. I have been having a harder time getting through and over obsticles that I usually clear. Not a huge deal yet and I'm sure I'll figure it out. Conversely, the bike rails the flowy single track we have here in Bend. Really loving that. Also love the weight. Just rockets out of corners and up hills.

During my first rides, I had the impression of the bike being harder to steer too.
May be it was me moving from a 26" to a 29", or just discovering a new bike.

If that may help, this has totally disappeared now.
And with the sharp 256, I'm now much faster, even on rocks and roots.

Same here, took a while to get used to the bike. And after 8 months, still fine tuning It's getting better and better.

You and I have nearly identical bikes.  You'll only come to love it more and more.  Especially on those 3000+ ft climbs!
