Re: XC full suspension frame
I also own both frames (936/909).
936 in dc configuration.
909 in xc marathon configuration.
Love both:-)
The 909 is a little bit more sensitive and playful.

That's good feedback. I'm looking for something with 120 mm up front and I'm more interested in something that will be efficient for long rides. How do the 936 and 909 compare in terms of pedaling efficiency?

Having two bottles does make the 909 more appealing. It gets pretty warm out here....

Re: Carbon Repair - Is my frame fixable? I talked to Canyon and they wouldn't do anything with the warranty. According to them, the chainstay protector is designed to shear off and absorb some of the energy, which it did. (There are a couple of dents in the metal piece.) They wanted $1600 for a crash replacement frame, which is quite high. (I paid about $2100 for the whole Shimano 105 bike.) I would have gone with a Carbonda or Velobuild frame instead if it wasn't fixable.

I sanded the area a bit to get a better look at the carbon, and I spent some more time tapping it. There did appear to be a crack running vertically from one of the gouges, and it sounded different right there.

I decided to have it fixed professionally, and I'm glad I did. I went through Moment Bicycles in San Diego, and it ended up being only $180 to fix it and match the paint, and it took less than a week. (The cost was only half of the initial quote!) The paint match is nearly perfect and you can't see any difference when the cranks are back on.

I though about fixing it myself with one of those kits, but for the money I'm glad I didn't. I could not have gotten it nearly as smooth or matched the color, and it probably would have taken me longer with all that I have going on now.

Re: Carbonda fm936 Thoughts
I asked him for more information about what standard matte is. I'm hoping that someone here might be able to shine more light on this too. My friend meanwhile said that standard matte should work since he will have to do sanding prep-work regardless.

I painted a Carbonda frame that had the standard matte finish. I sanded it down a bit first (not all the way to the carbon) before spraying with a 2k primer. The primer has held without any issues. All of my paint chips have only taken the color layer off and left the primer, so I think it's fine to paint over their matte finish.

I wrote up my experience on another thread:

Re: Shimano GRX brake adjustment Thanks for the suggestions. I will loosen the calipers and see what happens when I squeeze the lever. I did not have the mounts faced, so that is a possibility.

I can probably improve the trueness of the rotors a bit. If I still can't make any progress, I'll try bleeding a small amount of fluid.

Re: [Q]Comfortable Long ride Gravel Frame.
May I know which one is more relaxed in between carbonda 696 and 707?

If you just look at the frame measurement, the 696 is more upright than the 707. However, you can fit a shorter stem on the 707 and get a similar fit. My XL 707 with an 80 mm stem has about the same fit as a size 58 696 with a 100 mm stem an 5 mm more spacers.

I went with a longer frame, shorter stem, and wider bars to push the front wheel farther forwards and improve stability on rough terrain. If you are mostly interested in roads and smoother gravel surfaces, the 696 with a more conventional stem length might be the better choice.

Re: Shimano GRX brake adjustment So I managed to get my brakes sorted today!

I took the pads out of the front caliper and carefully squeezed the lever a few times. One piston was extending and retracting properly but the other was barely moving. I lubricated it with mineral oil and then squeezed the levers and pushed the pads back in a bunch of times. It started working a lot better after that.

On the rear brake, I noticed that the pads weren't seated firmly against the pistons, and I could wiggle them a bit. I tried replacing the retraction spring with the one from my road bike's Shimano 105 brakes (factory assembled and working well) and that held the pads in place much more firmly. I'm using some cheap Aliexpress pads and I guess the springs they come with aren't very good. The Shimano springs have a couple extra bends so they hold the pads against the pistons more securely. Luckily I had some extra Shimano springs and they got these pads fine, so I replaced both the front and rear.

After these changes, I was able to center the calipers by eye and the rotors only needed a few small tweaks to silence them.

I didn't have time to test ride it (and won't for a while) but it worked great on the stand!

Re: Interesting Aliexpress finds! - good deals, interesting stuff, new products etc!
I'm currently using Xpedo/Wellgo pedals mainly due to being lightweight and fairly affordable. I admit, they're not the easiest to clip in being 1-side, but I've adapted. Trace Velo gave the magnesium pedals an average review, but sometimes I think he writes off certain equipment with the presumption of failure, but when in actuality they hold up just fine.

235g magnesium alloy Look Keo pedals:

244g SPD pedals with steel mount surface despite being advertised as alloy (tested with a magnet):

I have about 2500 road miles on my basic Wellgo single-sided SPD pedals and they've held up reasonably well. I need to take them apart and lubricate them fairly frequently since the plastic insert starts to creak. They came out to about 306 g with a steel axle and aluminum bodies.

Re: Overall AliExpress carbon pucker factor? + CLANNAD wheels While I have no experience with the company, outright copies do not sit well with me. It's a blatant disregard for intellectual property, and that doesn't speak well to a company's ethics. Offering fake products makes me think less of a company, so I have less trust in what the offer.

Again, I have no experience or data to back this up, but my feeling is that a company offering fakes instead of their own branded stuff will be less interested in quality because their main setting point is that you can look like you have expensive kit without spending much.

There are plenty of other companies offering their own stuff at decent prices. I have some Elite rims on my mountain bike that seem good after a few short rides (more concerned about my wheel building skills than the rims!) and I'm building up a wheelset with Light Bicycle rims for my road bike. Both of those companies are pretty well respected.

I'm not too worried about being injured from a catastrophic rim failure, but being stranded miles from home would suck!

Re: Gravel Bar Width poll I have 46 cm bars on my gravel bike. I'm fairly large (190 cm) and I like having more leverage on rough trails.

I ride 42 cm bars on my road bike.
