29er / Re: 2014 RIP 9 RDO Replica?
« on: May 10, 2014, 08:27:51 AM »
Doubt they could produce that kind of quality in the pivots as you pointed out, but I would indeed buy one of they did.

This.

As absolutely sweet as it would be to get a Chiner RIP9 for about 1k.. The RDO has  bit of innovation that I would think would make it rather difficult for the Chinese guys to reproduce. And that is a beautiful thing. Means big companies need to actually innovate if they want to stay around.

Yeah, don't over think the width thing man. I say go with the 30mm for normal cross country/all mountain trail riding.

108
Hey Peter.. I'm definitely interested in one of the two rims you have posted.

Leaning towards the 80mm at this point. Been doing some research recently and it seems that might be the sweet spot. I'm definitely open to the 100mm width though, just didn't figure you guys would have them available so soon.

Do you happen to have weights for each size? And are they available now or soon?

Thanks for keeping us updated!

Yeah.. that's a bit too much rise for taste as far as aesthetics is concerned. Of course all that really matters is how it rides.

Love the blue grips tho!

Component Deals & Selection / Re: DT Swiss Hubs
« on: May 02, 2014, 02:23:33 PM »
Timely post for me as I'm trying to figure out what hubs to go with for my Chinese carbon rims that I plan on purchasing within the next few weeks.

I was actually almost 100% set on the DT Swiss 240s, but if you say their isn't much difference between the two I suppose I should rethink that decision. Not that I question you or anything.. I just find it hard to believe that there is such little difference in performance and quality when the price difference is pretty steep.

Thanks for the review.

There are apparently only two possible configurations with the spacers. You will use at least one of them, and they mount between the bearing cup and the bottom bracket shell.. If you have a 68mm wide bottom bracket shell, then you need 2 spacers on drive side and one on non-drive side. If you have 73mm shell then you only need one on the drive side. That is if you are using a triple crankset. If you're using the Shimano double crankset with a 73mm BB you would still only use one spacer, but on the non drive side - This will apparently give you the optimal chain line.

A quick measurement of the 057 BB puts it at 73mm, and I'm using the triple crankest.. so one drive side bottom bracket spacer/o-ring it is.

That's good info to know. Will def need to know this in a few weeks (hopefully!)

LOL at that meme! I know that feeling all too well!

And you shouldn't have to worry at all about that torque wrench. That's one of the good things about the beam style wrenches.. As long as the indicator sits perfectly on the zero, it's calibrated. But yeah, bits will help for sure.

29er / Re: Should I get the 057 or 256??
« on: April 23, 2014, 06:12:38 AM »
Hey guys.. Great forum idea, I could see this being a great resource in the future!

Total newb here, planning to jump in head first into my own carbon build. I was wondering if one of you guys could advise me on the differences between the IP 057 and the newer IP 256 frames?

The most of size of the 057 are in the stock now, but the 256, you have to wait many days.... about 50 days now..

Well that certainly will make my decision easier.. I actually havn't checked with them recently about what's in stick, and what's not..

Mind if I ask where you got this info, and if it applies to all of the sites that are selling the 256?

Either way, thanks for the heads up.

After looking around at some of the name brand carbon fat bike frames.. Those are very respectable weights indeed.

116
If you don't mind, all specs aside, out of the three tires you have listed the (Saguaro, X-king, Racing Ralph) which ones are your favs? You know.. when you're not really thinking about all the stuff we spend far too much time analyzing  :D  Which ones do you simply prefer when out on the trail?

Thanks for the insightful write-up.

I need to keep telling myself, "I'm not going to build another bike, I'm not going to build another bike..." :).

I've got $20 that says you have a full carbon fat bike within 12 months  ;D

I was up til one in the morning messing with that thing

Today, came home on my lunch brake (mineral fluid on my tie!)

Haha. Just like me, man - Mind can't rest until the job is done?

Okay.. So a complete Chinese carbon fat bike and rims will be a possible reality a bit sooner than I expected, honestly. Def looking forward to seeing some complete builds in the coming months.

Wish I had more knowledge to provide some input here.. but all I know is I want some bad ass, light weight carbon fat bike rims on the cheap. lol.
