Beautiful Day for a Ride
« on: March 07, 2015, 02:19:41 PM »
Sunny and 62ºF here in Atlanta today.  My ankle is feeling pretty good so it's time to go for a ride around the neighborhood.

There is a Giant/Scott bikes demo day at one of the local trails next weekend, hopefully the weather will be as nice just as nice next Saturday and Sunday.  If it is then I will do some short rides on one of the easier trails and try out some demo bikes.

Yes.. Felt great today here in good ole Arkansas today too! After a bout of snow and ice over the last month, this warm weather break had me thinking of nothing but hitting the trails. Love living in the natural state.

You ever do any camping, canoeing, or other outdoors activities, CD? Been doing unhealthy amounts of Amazon product research in preparations to gear up and be outdoors a whole heck of a lot more this year than years prior. Plus, I just really like camping/survival type gear!

Right now, I'm getting ready to buy this:

And for some reason that I haven't quite figured out yet, I'm pretty pumped about getting a dutch oven:

I've done some guided whitewater rafting on the Ocoee river (1996 Olympic course) which was a blast.  No camping or hiking for me though, not really my favorite things to do.  I'd rather stay nights at a cabin with a shower and bike on the trails during the day.

Same here in the Netherlands. Short bib and shirt. Started at 9:00 on the bike and ended at 16:00 at home. Made a nice ride of 50km. After that I hung out with the kids working on our skills. My daughter (11yr) is riding in a mtb race team and she new some exercises to work on our skills. It was fun to do.

I rode 20km around our neighborhood, road every street and there are some considerable hills.  It's a big neighborhood of 550 homes so there is plenty to paved road.

Looks like rain is coming all week for us, Monday thru Saturday morning.  Too bad too, the trails will not be in good condition for the Giant/Scott demo days next weekend.  The organizer contacted me and asked if I could help out on Sunday, at least that will be the better of the two days.

CD if you could do me a favor.  Demo the Scott Spark and see how close it is to our IP-036.  I've heard they are very similar.
Thanks!
Andy.

Hi Andy, I have already demoed the Scott Spark (with an XX1 drivetrain) back at the Southeast Bike Expo last year.  I also have a friend that I ride with who also has a 2013 Scott Spark 920.  In my opinion, the IP-036 and Scott Spark are very similar with the exception that his bike has a Shimano 2x10 drivetrain where I have a SRAM XX1 setup.  Another difference is the shock, where I have the Fox CTD BV, the Spark has a custom tuned Fox Nude shock but both shocks seem to provide a similar ride.  Our forks are basically the same as well, both Fox CTD Evolution.  I think if I didn't look down at which bike I was riding, it would be difficult to notice much of a difference.  I also think my bike is about 1.5 lbs lighter :).

Excellent, thanks for your input CD.  Thus is just the info I was looking for.  Ip036 a pound and a half lighter than the Scott Spark and thousands of dollars less...I love it!!
Thanks CD!

Supposed to hit 72deg here today.  Going to head out for my first real ride, besides the bike demos, on my local trail.  Hope to do my usual 10 mile loop that I haven't done since I was injured.  Trails will be packed as it is a Saturday and weather is again really nice.

Well, how'd it go? Make it all the way through without much trouble, I hope?

Thanks for asking SN.  The ride went well, except...  I came up on a pair of slower riders, nice looking ones at that, and the rider in front of me pulls off the trail to let me pass, but instead of passing I thought I'd let her lead a while so I stopped next to a tree and put out my hand to grab the tree without needing to unclip out of my pedals.  Something we all do frequently.  Well, the tree that I grabbed onto, which was at least 4 inches in diameter was dead and gave way.  I then proceeded fall down the hill on my right side, still clipped into my pedals.  I slid a short way and came to a stop on top of the dead tree and several other branches.

Lucky for me only a bit of tree rash on my right forearm.  The rider who had pulled over for me saw the whole thing, the crash was so loud that her friend who was 50 ft up the trail and around the bend yelled back asking if her friend was okay.

I got up, climbed back up the hill with my bike, laughed out loud, and said to her, "I guess I chose poorly."  They went on ahead while I pulled out a antiseptic wipe out of my Camelback and cleaned off the scrape on my arm.

Other than that, the ride went well.  A little slow, I only averaged 8.2 mph, normally I would average closer to 10 mph but having not ridden in almost 4 months, I thought that wasn't too bad.  I took a couple extra rest stops as well.  I think I'm going to start riding regularly again 2-3 times per week (weather permitting).

It's been really rainy here lately.  We only go 3 or 4 days and it rains again.  Rained all day today.

Been riding the IP-036 with the suspension fully open and even that still feels like it's beating me up a bit more than I like.  Also, my rear end is more sore than usual, both due to not riding in a while.  I may hold off taking the hard tail out for a while until I get several rides under my belt.

Ahh, well aren't you such a gentleman CD! I'm sure there were no ulterior motives there, right?  ;D  Haha.. I'm cracking up thinking about you pulling over in front of two cuties and then while at a total standstill fall completely over while clipped in!

Either way, I'm glad to hear you're getting back out there and enjoying the trails while the weather is perfect!
