A week ago I ordered a gravel wheelset from Peter at https://www.xmcarbonspeed.com and today he sent me photos of the finished wheels, which will be shipped tomorrow 👌

50mm deep / 36mm wide / 28mm internal / 36T in-house hub / Sapim CX Ray spokes / no access holes

Yes, the wheels aren't the lightest, but I don't care because I want something permanently stable, and something in this class costs about twice as much in Germany 🤷🏻‍♂️

I'm really excited and can't wait to try them out 😊

Curious if anyone else has popped the ends of their wheels to check for grease. All 4 are dry as a bone. I put a little grease in there but curious if anyone else had the same thing happen?

Now we are developing new Ultralight 20/20H hubs for carbon spokes, around 230g/pair, they should be released end of Jan or early Feb. At the same time, we are making titanium freehub for 20/20H ultralight hubs with same rachets design as Tactic hubs as well, so there will be plenty options on our hubs soon.

And we are going to do D78CU-33 same 26mm internal hooked rims 78mm depth , this rim would be released end of Jan or early Feb too.
So we would have 26mm internal hooked rim at 35/40/50/58/65/78mm depths options.

Oh man, this sounds amazing. Either a 65/78 or 78/78 wheelset for my new aero bike. Perfect! Can't wait for these to be released.

I'm excited for these new hubs as well. Will the ratchet ring be titanium? The aluminium ratchet on Tactic hubs is scary, and I'd have thought it could wear even faster if the freehub is titanium. If both are titanium, these hubs could be a giant killer.

Extralite also use alu ratchet rings, witha pretty decent track record. Personally, I wouldn't want to ride that either, but they won't necessarily fall apart like they're made of cheese.

I would.like to know if someone feel any speed wooble with Xiamen carbon speed with depth bigger than 50mm when descending straight with crosswind or sidewind and speed more than 50-60kmh. Lets said how they feel with such conditions.

It depends. I can describe my own experience.

I have D65CU-33 T1100 rims, 20/20H, with 5 mm carbon spokes. With no wind, everything is fine and the wheels are super fast, but you still have to be careful when larger cars pass you at high speed.

In windy conditions, you still need to make small corrections. In strong winds, it is not possible to ride with these wheels.

The problem is that the front wheel is simply too light and has too much surface area exposed to the wind. This issue with ultra-light, high-profile wheels has also been discussed on The Nero Show, if you know it.

My solution is to keep enough weight on the front wheel, have strong arms, and stay focused while riding. After a few months, you get used to making constant steering corrections, and eventually you don’t even notice it anymore.

My weight is 80 kg.

The idea that 100g off a set of wheels is significant enough to affect their handling seems implausible. More likely, the shape of these rims or the geometry of your bike is the reason why riding deep wheels in crosswinds is hard for you.

Crosswind instability arises from a sudden pressure difference between the wheel's two sides as the wheel enters a stall. Once in motion, a heavier wheel would have more torque-induced precision, not less. Looking at the wheel in isolation, a wobble induced by a stall would be worse with a heavier wheel and better with a lighter one. Meanwhile, if the effect is one of system inertia, the mass of the wheel is inconsequential in relation to the mass of the system.

I would love to understand where the Nero guys, Joe, or whoever started talking about light wheels being less crosswind-stable just because they were lighter got the idea from. It doesn't make sense to me that it would be significant.

The nero show guys love to larp with engineering oriented talking points, but it's always plainly obvious they didn't think too deeply on any of it when they do.

Though I deduced the issue with the light front wheel myself, because in show #154 they tested the Factor One with the new lightweight Black Inc carbon-spoke wheelset, and the behavior Jesse described was exactly the same as with my XMCS wheels.

But here’s the funny thing: I have a Winow WR054 bike with that crazy 6.5 cm wide fork, very similar to the Factor One. Maybe the wide fork is also a cause of this unstable behavior.

I have a pair of 50mm 28iw rims on an all road bike. Crosswinds and speedwobbles are constant. It may be the rims or it may be the bike but I have not had the chance to play around with either. my 40mm 26iw rims on my road bike feel much more stable. both wheels are XMCS.

Have you tried to install 40mm and 26iw wheelset in you all road bike to check if the speed wobbles comes from the bike or wheels?

For now I have/had a set of 50 mm Elite Edges (on two different frames) and before 60 mm SLRs (on the third frame). While I felt crosswinds with 60 mm wheels which are noticeably heavier, my 50 mm are super stable and I have no wobbles. I ordered a set of 58mm deep 26 IW wheels and live in a windy area, let's see how Peter's wheels will perform at this depths.

Dear All,

Firtst of all, a happy and, above all, healthy new Year.
I got my wheels last week and installed TPU tubes fom Barbieri NXT Road 65.
I have not installed the wheels in my bike (waitung for the frame)
Today I heard a loud bang and the tire was flat.After I removed the inner tube, I saw that there was a hole in one of the rim's recesses (see pictures)
I installed the inner tube without rim tape, as I thought that was only needed for tubeless setups.
Do you know this problem?

You always need rim tape if there are spoke holes in the rim bed  ;D
