If you want to protect the rim edge with the tire, then the tire needs to be wider than the rim at the rim edge. Now your tire+rim has an hourglass shape. So air flow can  separate at the tire. And the space between the widest point of the tire and widest point of the rim becomes a void air must fill and will increase drag

It's an off road tyre, airflow is already separated because the off road tyre profile chopped it all up. The negative space creating a negative pressure area behind the tyre is actually a positive because it pulls that turbulent airflow back towards the rim so it can more easily fill the wake behind the rim.

Got my D50CU-33 t1100 setup with 24 CX-ray spokes per wheel last week. My set Weights 1276gr for both wheels. Received tubeless tape, valves and two GP5000S TR 32c tires, which i seated today and pumped up to 5 bars. Both of them measure around 33.7-34.1mm so actually almost 1mm narrower than i expected. Glad i didnt go for 30c which i was thinking about.
Now i just need my new Chaser ultralight discs, and i will take them for a ride.
Looks better balanced and stiffer than my Elitewheels Edge Gravel 45mm deep 31mm wide (24mm internal width), while also being about 100gr lighter. Fun times.
Will probably get a set of the new ultra wide gravel wheels as soon as they are available also!

Out of interest, what is the lightest set of wheels xmcs can do?
I watched pandapodium the other day on YouTube at the bike show saying they would be selling a 900g ish wheelset soon.

I'm looking at another set of wheels 45/50 wit some new  H-Works hubs due for release  soon 20-20Hole hubs 227grams.
These are 90kg weigh limit will be estimated 1011grams

I don't like these super wide gravel rims. All you do is expose the rim to damage from rocks and such. It doesn't even do anything for aero because the edge of the rim is where airflow coming off an off-road tyre is absolutely demolished. If you're gonna make a wide rim, it's better to do it like DT Swiss (Swiss side) and Parcours, where the rim edge is relatively narrow, and then the rim bulges out closer to the middle. Safer and more aero.

I agree on this one. there are a lot of topics on weight weenies and trainer road forums on why those super wide rims are not a good idea for gravel and even MTB. Respected users and testers like DC rainmaker or go lama had a lot of problems with those exposed sidewalls. From my knowledge 28 internal is optimal for wide tires.

Depending on price and weight these will certainly be my next set of gravel wheels. Have been eyeballing the Nextie SGV, but have been not ordered since i emailed Peter about these a while ago, so i did know they were on track for this season. Hopefully they will match Nextie weight wise, and as usually have great price like xmcarbonspeed usually does.
I would say there is no problem at all with damaged sidewalls if you go >45mm width, and these are also hooked compared to 303 XPLR. I think smaller width will also work fine - but tire manufacturers have to design the tires for these kind of rims for that. (Smaller tire casing width lay flat, but wider contact patch - if 40mm should measure 40mm that is) I would even think it may introduce lighter tires for same width because of that.

Those wide rims are a known problem in MTB for years now, resulted in many tire models with stronger and stiffer causing which negatively impacts rolling resistance.

For me a combo of the 50 33 and 60 31 paintless 1100, without drill holes in the rim bed, with 3.8 carbon spokes.

I thought with the carbon spokes the hole-less rim bed wasn't an option.  Is this something new?

I was waiting to hit the 1000 km with my review, and now I can proudly say that I can fully recommend wheels from XMcarbon speed and Peter. The conversation with him is/was a pure pleasure, he responded immediately and he has a lot of knowledge regarding the wheels and the bike industry, even better than frame manufacturer as he ensured me that the external width will not be a problem in my frame. I have Avenger Shuttle SL in size 58. In general I was looking something for the climbing and riding in the mountains so he recommended the D35CU-33 rims, so 26 mm of internal width and 33.9 mm external with height of 35 mm. I'm fully satisfied, the wheels are stiff, accelerating very fast, handling and cornering is a full pleasure. I have not issues with them, I felt very confident on quick descents. Climbing and ascending is a pure happiness and absolute delight. The wheels are quite wide, so those are much more comfortable than my previous Avians. On wheels I have XDR driver and 30 mm Goodyear Supersport F1 R TL tires, and installed tubeless system. The tape and valves were provided and the installation of tubeless was trouble-free, all done very quickly. The wheels were tested on Mallorca and mountains and flat roads nearby Warsaw in Poland. Last but not least, the whole set so wheels, valves, tires, cassette 10-44 etc. is 2275 g on my unprofessional scale so the excellent result for me. Summing up, I can fully recommend the company, the wheels and for sure, if I buy another set of wheels, it will be the XMcarbon speed! It's my honest review and opinion. A bit of an off-topic, Mariusz, but how's the Avenger frame?

So I will try to have it quick, as it's off-topic  My rating is 10/10, love the bike, especially during the climbing and descending. However he's doing very good on the flat roads. Having the XMCS wheels I feel they are just made for each other  I will do proper comparison to the newest version of Elves Falath EXP, I wonder what is the difference on flat and windy areas, where I live.
