Survey: Chinese electronic Groupsets
« on: April 30, 2025, 10:38:17 AM »
Due to the endless threads about Chinese electronic groupsets (Wheeltop EDS Tx, GEx, Ltwoo eGR, eRX, eR9 – you name it) and the more or less sponsored reviews on YouTube, I had the following idea:
If you own one of these electronic groupsets, please share your concise opinion about it.
The goal of this thread is to provide an overview of the groupsets and their current status in real-world testing, rather than having to sift through countless thread pages.

Therefore, I kindly ask: write a few words on the following points, but please avoid in-depth discussion about the groupsets here. That can be done in the respective dedicated threads in the forum.

I’d be happy if we could build a comprehensive overview of Chinese electronic groupsets.
Thank you!

Groupset:
would you recommend?
where bought?
mileage (roundabout):
flaws?: i.e. fiddly instructions, derailleur died irreversible, none

Groupset: Ltwoo ER9
would you recommend? Only on sale (bought for 350$) and if you already have crank and cassette
where bought? Aliexpress Ltwoo official store
mileage: around 1200km so far
flaws?: Shifter buttons are mushy. Sometimes hard to tell if pressed or not, especially with gloves. Impossible to remap the buttons. Stupid brake calipers(replaced with zrace). Front derailleur cage shows a lot of cosmetic wear

Groupset: Ltwoo ER9
would you recommend? Only on sale
where bought? Aliexpress 80 Designer Store
mileage: around 2500km so far
flaws?: Front derailleur cage shows a lot of cosmetic wear.  Two or three times no shifting at all or when i "SRAM"-shifted. Only option to solve this, was to connect to a battery via cable (phone during ride). And the breaks are only okay on the flats, but awful on descents. Replaced them yesterday with ZRACE XG4

Groupset: Ltwoo eR9 2x ver. 1 (I own two)
Would you recommend? Only on sale and if you know what you are doing ($350 USD)
where bought? Bought 2 groupsets, 80 Design Store (highly recommended) / LTwoo Factory Choice Store (only buy here if you know what you're doing)
mileage (roundabout): Several thousand miles/kilometers
flaws?: Highly recommended to protect battery connectors with dielectric grease, liquid tape, rubber cement, etc. Swapped out pulley wheels for Ultegra wheels, FD shows lots of brassing, FD shift buttons can easily be pressed on accident. Some batteries do not give accurate charge readouts. Also there are several silent hardware updates, components are running different firmware. Despite the flaws and if you're able to figure it out, it does the job.  LTwoo app is solid with real-time adjustability and feedback. 10/11/12 speed cassette flexibility and replaceable batteries are a big selling point for me. Version 3 seems to address many of the issues of ver. 1, unfortunately it will be now difficult to obtain for US customers.

Groupset:LTwoo eGR 1x original cage length max 46t cassette (silent update on cage now allows max 50t cassette)
would you recommend? Yes especially on sale ($300 USD)
where bought? LTwoo Factory Choice Store (Only buy if you know what you're doing)
mileage (roundabout): Several thousand miles/kilometers
flaws?: Highly recommended to protect battery connectors with dielectric grease, liquid tape, rubber cement, etc. The eGR shifters have better haptics than eR9 ver. 1. RD is very sturdy, with minimal chain slap with quick shifting. Same LTwoo app for tuning, though they need to implement tuning profiles for different 1x cassettes. Gravel bikes have to deal with XD, HG and MS freehubs, so more issues with fine tuning across different freehub platforms.

Groupset: Wheeltop GeX 1x12
Would you recommend? Mostly yes
Where bought? Aliexpress store
Mileage: ~400 miles, 30ish hours.
Comments: The initial setup app was hot garbage due to translation errors. Ended up getting the derailleur stuck in the far left position when it "thought" it was in the first cog. The installation guide is also hard to follow/understand. Those are obviously not hardware-related issues.

The hoods don't feel as nice as Ultegra Di2. The brake levers themselves are a little "looser" than what I'm accustomed to with Di2 -- they have more forward play than they should, meaning they have a tendency to move when the buttons are pressed. The biggest flaw by far is the shifter button action. They feel "gritty", and the small button on the right shifter gives a click feel/sound well before it has actually engaged. The force required to shift is more than Di2 and I frequently don't get a shift that I should have on my Ultegra. When combined with the aforementioned forward motion, this is particularly annoying. The rear derailleur itself is great, though, and has never missed a shift nor dropped a chain on the same ride that a friend's SRAM group dropped multiple times (note: my advice that she has one too many links in her chain is ignored harder than a check engine light).

Conclusion: Shimano should be worried. Once the shifters are improved to Ultegra level, there would be little reason to go with anything else. I will probably still put a 1x Di2 GRX on the bike whenever it is released, if only because the shifters are that much better.

Wheeltop EDS TX
TanTan/w frame
I'd recommend
Under 500 mi.

App is painful, but works well enough once you adapt. There is a 3rd party jailbroken app available thru FB group, but it requires web bluetooth so no go with Iphone. It includes some stuff that is useful, including breaking out "race mode" shifting from sleep mode.

Other than initial setup, my one issue is that the charge port cover on the rear simply will not close, so its taped over in case of rain. Other than that, it shifts well, levers feel fine, brakes are ok (going to swap in Ekar calipers for weight/feel) and is future proof-ie will work with the new 13 spd stuff coming. Some reports of beta type issues online, but to be expected give product cycle and cost. Same thing occured with early Chinese powermeters and now they're pretty flawless.

Groupset: Ltwoo ER9 v1
Would you recommend: Yes, if the price is right
Where bought: Aliexpress 80 Designer Store
Mileage (roundabout): ~1000m, 18 months
Flaws: app is a little wonky (but ultimately usable); shift buttons don't have a lot of tactile feedback; buttons can't be remapped; charge port is not covered and can collect dirt (no real issue thus for though); some cosmetic wear on front derailleur; battery level doesn't get reported correctly on Garmin head unit
