Velobuild AERO GRAV Frame

Hi, the lower gap on mine is actually quite large — I used the original headset set from Velobuild (see attachment).

It seems you put the bearing upside down or just installed the fork crown (don't needed).

did you install the crown race?

yes i did. took it apart again yesterday and used the original crown race plus lower beraring provided by velobuild.
That sorted out the problem!

Finally done and out for my first ride on it today.

I’m very positive! I’ve made it a budget build. So it’s more of a winter/bad weather bike for me, than a gravel. So only 35 mm tires.

Total price of just under 1300€/1420$.

first of all a really nice looking bad weather bike!

but was 1300€ from a blank piece of paper to a complete bike? seems a little on the opitimistic side or did you have some spare parts lying around? or was it some second hand shopping.

I had tools and pedals, else the rest was 1300€. The only thing I got second hand was the Ultegra crank with an 4iiii left arm power meter. I found it for 120€. Else I picked cheap Arisun tires, cheap Bucklos handlebar tape and so on. Even the saddle was only 10€ from AliX.

I’ve a spreadsheet with everything. So I know it was 1300€

I want to build it up 1x12 with the GRX 827Di2 and a 44t chainring, so I can easily swap in my road tires between the seasons.

Im more in it for the building experience than anything else.

Yeah, sorry - I could not resist the price Actually just got lucky. It looked like he was selling the crank only but when I opened the add it was with powermeter also. Don't think many noticed before me.

Also my first build! One of the reasons I went for a budget build was also to learn. The Di2 will help you a lot - the only real problem I had was with the cables through the handlebar. So hopefully it goes smoothly for you!

Finished this build a few weeks ago and I’ve been riding it a lot since.

Components:
• Size XL (I’m 200 cm with very long legs, haha)
• 90×400 integrated cockpit with flair (from VB)
• SRAM Rival cranks, shifters, and brakes
• Alugear 44t chainring
• SRAM DUB BB
• GX Eagle Transmission rear derailleur
• GX Eagle Transmission 10–52 cassette
• GX Eagle Transmission chain
• Light Bicycle WG55 wheels
• Galfer Wave rotors
• Vittoria Terreno 45 mm tubeless

That’s basically it. I do have a full spreadsheet with every little bit and bolt if anyone wants it. Total cost came in just under 3000 €, which still feels kind of insane. I got lucky with some second-hand parts and Black Friday deals.

The ordering process was super smooth. I had a few questions that were answered quickly, and when I asked to buy extra spacers they were included free of charge — a small but very appreciated gesture from Chris. I also ordered the flared cockpit (available if you email them) and an extra seatpost with setback.

The frame arrived in about 2 weeks and was very well packed. The paint job is more than fine. I was a bit worried because of earlier comments, but either they’ve improved it or my standards are low . Either way, it looks great, has a nice sparkle, and seems to be holding up well.

The build itself was mostly very smooth. The only real annoyance was the tolerances on the cockpit spacers. The largest ones (15 mm, I think) had a tiny mismatch, which made mounting them extremely fiddly. If you were even slightly off, they’d snap out of place and end up on the floor. It took four hands and a good 20 minutes to get them on. On the plus side, they definitely aren’t going anywhere now. Personally, I prefer plastic spacers with a bit more leeway and compression than aluminum.

Other than that, I’m very impressed.

The bike rides extremely well. I’ve ridden rocky Spanish gravel, singletrack, sand, asphalt, and now wintery Scandinavia, and it handles everything confidently. It is on the stiff side and not the most “comfortable” if that’s what you’re after. I actually like feeling the ride, but I can see how that could be a downside for some.

Planning to do quite a few gravel races next year, so I’m looking forward to putting many more kilometers on it.

I’m planning to run a Rival 2x12 groupset with a 46/33 and 10-33 setup, using non-wide cranks and a 'standard' front derailleur. Do you think I'll run into any issues? I'm planning to use 40mm tires.

I'm specially worried about the front derailleur and if it will have enough space between the tyre.

I think you'll be fine with the 40's, not sure any larger since that battery sticks out pretty far. I spaced my FD out 4mm or so with shims to run a 2.1 but Im on ltwoo so the footprint is smaller than your sram one.

I'm considering the Velobuild AERO GRAV to ride some gravel sportives in the UK in 2026.

I'm trying to keep costs down and have some 650b wheels with Racing Ralph 2.1 tyres.  It looks like some of you are fttinh 2.0+ on 700c wheels so am I safe in assuming these wheels / tyres will fit and no look too "gappy".  I think the diameter will be equivalent to a 700 x 35....do you think a 27.5 x 2.25 would fit too?

I would think yes, (all 700c), my rear is measuring 53mm and I have maybe a mil of clearance both sides, front is a 2.25 and 2mm clearance both sides and prob 3mm to top of the fork.
