New all round wheelset advice

Hi all,

Want to get a new set of wheels ordered up and just want a bit of advice on a couple of options.

Main specs I have narrowed it down to are:
55mm deep
Hooked
Aero steel spokes
Brass nipples
Purple anodised hubs
Plan to run 32c tyres
Target weight: around 1150g

2 questions I just would like advice on.

1. What would the optimal width of rim be to run 32s?
2. Any advice on which Chinese suppliers could build these at a good price?

I was hoping to use Zara at Zen wheels, but they have no purple hub option.
I have enough boring wheels, so the hub colour is non negotiable.
Matter at Tagoola also didn’t offer brass nipples when I ordered my aero raptors, so he’s out too.

Maybe DFS or Peter might be able to build something, but they are heading into the more premium end of pricing. Just wondered if there’s anywhere I’ve missed?

At the moment you're unlikely to be able to get a 55+ rim profile that will hold 32s (aka external width needs to be at least 35) and steel spokes for 1150 - not even close.

There are some brands doing 25/32 or 26/33 in road layups but these will only hold a 30 to 105% (I have a 26/33 and the 30 measures 33.5).

If you want to run 32-35 and not break 105 s you'll be looking for gravel wheelsets, which top out at 50 and will cost you maybe 1300.

Zen can offer a set of 25 internal / 32mm external rims which would be fine.
55mm, alpina spokes, brass nipples, 1181g.
I just really want to hold out for anodised hubs which Zara can’t offer.

A 32mm tyre on a 25 internal => ~34-35mm WAM
Not only will you miss the 105 sweetspot, you will also lightbulb with more than a mill each side.
You would need to go 35mm+ wide for peak aerodynamics.

If you want 55mm deep wheels, you care about aero, so looking at tyre transition will have a way bigger effect then 10mm of depth.

Just run 30s and they will blow out to 32. I have LB Airia 52s and they are all what you asked for minus brass ripples and ano hub. Came out to 1180 grams. The brass nipples are going to bring that weight up a bit though.

The conditions look a little tricky to hit, especially the steel spoke and weight.

Farsports have C series which is using regular steel spokes, even with 21F/28R spokes, 50mm is already over 1300g.

With carbon spokes (18F/18R) and 50mm rims it's around 1200g, still beyond your weight requirement and not reaching your 55mm rim depth.

There are EVOs series that go with ceramic bearings, and that will finally meet your weight requirement, but will also introduce total system weight limit (<120kg), and I never believe ceramic bearings are suitable for cycling usage.
Again, those wheels that meet your weight requirement are all using carbon spokes.

I guess there may be some lightweight hubs, or even lower spoke numbers, but I strongly doubt if those combination will be stiff enough.

And about 32mm tyres, I'm running 28mm tyres on 24mm IW 32mm EW wheels, the tyres already measure 32mm, and matching the wheels pretty well.
So it's more about your tyre width and the wheel profiles.

IMO more important to nail the widths than weight. XMCS has a 36/28 EW/IW rim in various depths that should pair really nicely with 32s. I dont know what weight they land at built up but they will be light enough. Prob under 1400 at the heaviest.

A weight of 1,150g really isn't the priority. With brass nipples, it’s simply not realistic to hit that mark. Regarding the color, we should have the purple Serenade SR268 hubs in stock. When you invest in a wheelset, you are buying reliability and a smooth ride, never a compromise on safety.

I would just go for these except she can't offer purple hubs, so yes, it can easily be done...and at a reasonable price.
There are lots of sub 1000g wheel sets now on offer, so getting under 1200g with brass nipples and lightweight steel spokes isn't that much of a stretch.

You aren't listening to us. Those will only just clear a 30 GP5000, which on a 25 internal gets bigger than 32mm. Alpina Hyperlight spokes are incredibly light.

That 90kg limit is saying something that you also don't want to listen to.

Its ok - im not going for these wheels - I was just showing as an example, that yes, 55mm deep wheels are easily achievable under 1200g these days.

I will be going more future focussed and looking into 29mm internal rims and pair them with a 32mm tyre.
These will hopefully be for the upcoming LCR020-D.

For the purple hubs look for THM R2 hubs. DFS had them in offer. Try with Angler to quote what you want.

We all know you can get a 50mm wheel with questionable durability under 1200 with steel spokes. LB's Superlight Arias will get you there if you're light enough and ride good tarmac.

The point wasn't about those wheels, it was about a wheel genuinely compatible with 32c tyres (which will require a 35 external at the minimum). If you use a 29 internal wheel, that external will might even need to be 36-37.

None of that is going to come under 1200g.

You will have to sacrifice one of the following - run a 30 not a 32 (at least on the front), go over 1200g, or use carbon spokes. None of these are practical issues and you'd still get a good wheel.
