hi sender, you who have experience with wheels, don't you think that 18 spokes per wheel are not enough to make the wheel rigid? I was thinking about wheels with 20 Peter spokes, but I'm held back by the idea that for a weight like mine, I'm well over 80kg, closer to 90kg, they are too delicate. can you give me your opinion? thanks

Hey! I know a bit about this  ;D but not as much as some! – for context, I was riding my CRW 50-60S wheels when I was around 90 kg and had zero issues. Those wheels have a max rider limit of 100 kg and run 16 spokes in the front and 20 in the rear, also  XMC  use T1100 in there higher end wheels which is more expensive that most of the the other OEMS I know use T1000 in there higher end wheels.
 
T1000 vs T1100 Carbon Fiber
Both T1000 and T1100 are high-grade carbon fibers made by Toray, a leading Japanese carbon fiber manufacturer. But T1100 is a step above in performance:

Tensile Strength:

T1000: ~6,370 MPa

T1100: ~7,000 MPa
→ That’s around 10% higher tensile strength.

What does that mean in practice?
With T1100, manufacturers can build wheels that are:

Stronger under stress (better for sprinting, cornering, and heavier riders)

Stiffer with less material

Lighter, since fewer layers or thinner layups can achieve the same strength

Stiffness Difference (10%+):
A wheel built with T1100 can be up to 10–15% stiffer compared to an equivalent wheel made with T1000, assuming similar layup and design. This can translate to:

Sharper power transfer (more efficient sprinting and climbing)

Better handling at speed

A more responsive ride feel

Of course, stiffness has to be balanced with comfort – too much can feel harsh – but T1100 gives designers more flexibility to fine-tune that balance without adding weight.

Toxin probably has a bit more experience than me on this topic, but wheel stiffness depends on a bunch of factors: rim depth, spoke count, spoke type, hub quality, lacing pattern, etc. It’s not always as simple as just counting spokes.

That said, going from 18 to 20 spokes likely won’t make a noticeable difference in stiffness. If you’re really concerned, you might as well go up to 24 spokes, at least in the rear. Stiffness tends to matter more in the back wheel, especially for heavier riders. So you could run 18 in the front and 20 or even 24 in the rear.

To put it in perspective, adding 6 carbon spokes only adds about 18.6 grams (carbon spokes are around 3.1 g each), which is basically nothing.

Also, deeper rims are naturally laterally stiffer than shallower ones, which helps even more with wheel rigidity. Rim depth plays a key role in stiffness too, especially lateral stiffness, so it’s another factor to keep in mind when looking at overall wheel feel.

In general, increasing spoke count and switching from steel to carbon spokes both increase wheel stiffness. Carbon spokes can add around 8–15% more stiffness compared to steel. Each step up in spoke count (e.g., from 18 to 20 or 20 to 24) can increase stiffness by roughly 5–8%, though the gains tend to taper off beyond 28 spokes. The goal is finding the right balance between stiffness, weight, and comfort depending on your riding style and terrain.

By the way, what rim depth are you considering? And what wheels are you currently riding – have you had any issues with them?
Personally, I wouldn't want super stiff wheels either – it has to be a balance. But finding that sweet spot can be tricky. Some riders know exactly what they like and stick to that format.

A 50/50 or 50/60 mm front/rear setup is a great all-round rim depth option – enough aero benefit without being too twitchy or overly stiff.

hi sender. thanks, you wrote an encyclopedic treatise. by rigidity I mean the lateral one, when you stand on the pedals and especially for the rear wheel. in theory the more spokes there are the less the wheel flexes. I am not entirely convinced of having 20 or worse 18 spokes at the rear with weights of 80-90kg, then I agree with you that in the vertical sense a good wheel should be not very rigid.
I am very undecided between the XMcarbon 20/20H by peter or the Elitewheels DRIVE II 50mm.
the farsport S5 with 18 spokes seem too flexible to me, even jo of pandapodium with his light weight found them not very rigid.
I don't see any other wheels around 1000 euros, perhaps the magene EXAR 508

Then go 24 in the back with XMC 28 seems a bit overkill with carbon spokes.
Or try another OEM like me

I have with DTSwiss hub. 20front/24rear, 3,8mm spokes, which are supposed to be stiffer than +5mm ones. The wheels are everything I wanted. All extra weight is in the hub, so no added rotational weight.

Bit of a follow-up post—I mentioned a while back that I’d ordered some carbon wheels from XM Carbon Speed. They arrived today: 50mm front / 60mm rear, 5mm bladed carbon spokes, 18-hole hubs.

Took them straight out for a spin on the Tuesday night chaingang ride. First impressions: they’re fantastic. A few people commented that they’re not the cheapest out there, but the build quality is seriously impressive.

Honestly, I think they’re superb wheels for the money, great quality. Really, really pleased with them.

Hello everyone,

Was looking trhough the discussion and I hace a few questions:
I weight 90kg. and I mainly ride on road but I sometimes do very light gravel for fun. I don't climb and I'm looking for a 50/55mm depeth wheel set.
The road condition is good where I ride so I'd like to get carbon spokes but considering my weight is it a good option ? Should I go for 20 or 18 is doable ? Same question for the spokes diamter, should I go with 5mm ones ?
Also, wondering if having covered spoke hole is a good choice in my situation (I understand that they less robust?)
I would like to treat myself and go for the highest possible quality carbon speed has to offer but I also want to ride safely.

Would very much appreciate you guys answers !

Light gravel I would  go
20 front 24 rear myself
Spoke diameter depends what your after really 4/5mm for aero. Think light weight carbinnspokes are 3.1 or 3.2mm
Carbon spokes fine at 90kgs
Don’t do gravel but I’d assume steel or a rope spike would be more comfortable.
XM Carbon wheels have a 120kg weight limit .
Spoke holes on rim bed or not does not make much difference n
Personally spoke holes for ease of maintenance

Who's hubs are those?

XM CarbonSpeed hubs the new 18/18hole
However they also have a 16hole front hub in development no timeline current
50/50 would be say 1190 estimated
50/60 were 1200 estimated

Spoke holes in the rim bed are easier for maintenance and spoke replacement that’s all.
10% 🤔 honestly that’s a hard one aa 18/18 is road wheel  hub.
Personally Inwould ask peter from XM CarbonSpeed myself.
24mm inner for me would be ideal with maybe a 30mm but it’s persanle preference.
What frame  do you have my SL8 is ok for I believe 32c tyres. So my 25mm inner width rims I have the 28mm tyres sizes 31.70 and there is still 5/6mm either side.

What Size tyres does that frame support?
According to what I have found online it’s 35mm
26mm with a 32mm tyre would probably come out to maybe 35mm.
I would contact Canyon to confirm clearance and I would measure the clearance on the frame myself.
XM from what I’m aware of don’t offer 25mm
