29er / Re: IP-036 29er Full Suspension Carbon Frame Build

The Trail mode is really good in that there is very shock movement from pedaling but the suspension is fairly active in response to the terrain.

As you may be able to infer from my name. I'm more of a set it and forget it kinda guy. I'm also on a budget. I also don't want to settle if I do pop for a nice full squish. If you only had Trail mode do you think you'd still be content with the ride of your IP-036? I ask because, as you know, if you want to save money on the shock, you lose all those fancy options. That said, depending on your bike's suspension, it may be possible to have a fully capable bike with a more simplified shock set up.

« on: May 11, 2014, 10:09:39 AM »
They absolutely could replicate the carbon Turner Czar, but I got $20 that says an attempt at the RDO would be a total fail.

Reading through this thread.. I'm starting to see the there are really only a few basic variations on suspension design. The RDO and Czar use similar designs, it's just that it looks different. Add that to all of the marketing buzz words the mtb industry likes to use and it seems like there is a million suspension options on the market.

I will say that on the Czar, the pivot bearings look tiny to me, and even the IP-036 bearings look more substantial than that. Not sure if that matters but I did notice it.

Doubt they could produce that kind of quality in the pivots as you pointed out, but I would indeed buy one of they did.

Unless there's something I missed, there's nothing in that size yet. Man, it's gotta be frustrating to shop for a bike when you're that tall.

That's actually pretty logical - That a riser bar works well on a full squish where you tend to stay seated for more of the ride.

and don't like any brake disk rub.

I also have the XT's.. any tricks for eliminating it completely? I have it slightly on my front and it's been fairly persistent.

well first off I'm constantly getting confused about what bike is which so I posted IP136 but I meant to post IP-156 and have corrected that in the original post.

The green should be something like kawasaki green. The color I asked them to make it is found here http://www.colorcombos.com/00FF00-hex-color.

For travel I'm looking to have either 120mm or 110. The specs on the bike say it is designed to have 120 up front and 105 in the back so I think anything between 110-120 up front and 100-110 in the back should do the trick!

Yeah, all of the numbered names can get a bit confusing at times. There seems to be no rhyme or reason to how these frames are named and put out on the market. Regardless, looks to be a sweet frame, congrats!

As for the fork, I think SN did well by getting the Manitou tower pro. Those can be had for good prices if you keep your eye open and just from what I've gathered reading reviews and what not.. They're supposed to be awesome forks and really excel at small bump compliance, which is where many of the more popular fork options tend to lack a bit sometimes. The xfusion fork you mentioned is actually new to me... but it too seems to be an under rated fork and gets really good reviews at a decent price. I'm sorry.. I just can't bring my self to pay $6-$700 for a fork. Can they actually be twice as good as these $3-$400 forks? Maybe so, but I doubt it.

Don't care for the Camo theme they have going.

You're being far too nice lol.. That is the ugliest bike I've ever seen.

Excellent reply. Thanks for being so thorough.

Was especially interesting to hear your comparison to the Anthem as that's one of the bikes that I'd seriously consider getting. Maestro seems to get ridiculous amounts of praise around all the forums and blogosphere, and it's also a bit more affordable than the similar Specialized, Niner, or Yeti bikes. Although, I will say that if price was of ne concern then I would hands down go with the new Rip 9 RDO carbon, awesome reviews and one of the best looking frames I've ever seen. Not that looks should matter, but come on.. we all care!

I think what people sometimes forget (myself included) is that a lot of the suspension performance had to do with the shock itself. Not all of it, some more than others, just saying that I think that sometimes gets over looked. The absolute main factor is like you said, the 036 is half the price for a similarly specced bike. I mean you have a full carbon, full suspension 29er that weighs around 23 pounds. That's going to cost you at least 7-8k. Maybe a bit less if you find a deal.

Would freaking love to walk up on an IP-036 at a demo day and be able to compare with other name brands. Do you mind sharing how much the bike was priced at? My guess is 6k? With SLX / X9 level components?

29er / IP-036 29er Full Suspension Chiner Vs Other FS Bikes

Hey Carbon_Dude,

If I remember correctly, you stated somewhere here at Chinertown that your old bike was some type of Specialized full suspension 26er.. Now I know it's not a direct comparison but I'm interested in how you would rate the quality of the actual suspension part of the chiner frame (pivots, joints, linkages, etc.) compared to that of a big name like Specialized?

Also.. besides quality of the full suspension components of the frame, what about function? Do you think the suspension of your chiner frames compare favorably with that of the latest from Niner, Salsa, Giant, etc.? Does this chiner frame imitate name brand frame, that I am unaware of?

Really interested in this frame, especially after seeing your build with it, but I want not only a well manufactured full carbon full suspension frame, I also want a well designed suspension that cam compete with the likes of Maestro and such.

Sorry for so many questions, and I completely understand if you're simply not familiar enough with all of the different designs and frames out there to answer, but it seems like you're always posting up about going to the latest demo days, so I thought it was worth an ask.

in that pic.. is that were you're planning to try them stem at, or you just threw it on there real quick without much thought? looks kinda high to me is all. messin up your crown race is no biggie, i'll encourage you to be more thorough when prepping to cut the steer tube, though.

Don't sweat it. I mean.. that was pretty dumb lol.. but I've done equally dumb things that ended up costing me a hell of a lot more than the $25 that a new cane creek lower headset would run you.

Besides, the lower headset doesn't usually give you problems, it's the upper that usually acts up. I bet you end up not having to change anything out at all.

Lucky to have that in your back yard!

Great comparison thread. Gotta be honest, I never could understand why someone would need multiple bikes before but now I could totally understand how having a full suss and a hardtail would be about right. They really are different beasts.. there is something about the efficient power transfer of a hardtail that I just love, and always have. Rode a new Rip9 last week and it was a blast! But I still wouldn't give up my hardtail for it.

These chiners make it possible to own two very high end bikes for a reasonable "investment' as you have obviously realized and taken advantage of. Nice job.

Couple of questions:

How much travel is in the rear end of the full suss?

The obligatory question - If you could only have one?
I'm certain your answer will be the full squish, but perhaps not.

Tires are just one of those things.. There are sooo many, and we all have different bikes and trail conditions, it's difficult to choose which ones are best for you without first spending $500 on rubber. It doesn't take long, these days. Although, I do admit to being somewhat of a tire whore... I've never tried the Geax Suguaro TNT tires but after your write-up.. they're on my "to try list"

Thanks for the write up.

Edit: Oh wait... 1000 grams per tire.. on a full carbon sweet ass rig such as yours? Might I suggest that you went from 550 gram tires to 1000 grams tires, and skipped the sweet spot of 700-800 grams? I'm sure you have your reasons, because the bike is too well thought out otherwise.. Just interested in what those reasons are, if you don't mind?
