BikeHubStore.com Hubs?
« on: July 15, 2014, 10:01:03 AM »
Anybody have a set and have anything to say about them? I've read mostly good things about them and at one point that's what I was going to use with my carbon wheelset.. but I ended up having a conversation with one of the more respected wheel builders that lurks on mtbr and he told me that for my weight (200 lbs) I should just avoid them alltogether. Since I ended up buying my Sun Ringle pre-built wheels anyway.. it didn't really matter, but now that I want to build up a carbon wheelset I'm back to looking for the right hubs again.

So far it's Dt Swiss 240s or a set of hubs from http://www.bikehubstore.com/

Opinions? Did I get bad info from the "expert" wheel builder (he may have been trying to sell some that he sold - not sure) or was he right and they should be avoided?

brmeyer135: I saw that you recommended them in the "Most Carbon'd Out" thread so looking forward to seeing if you have more input on the matter.

I didn't know that hubs are also weight related. I thought it was only for the rims (in combination with the spokes).

I have the older models and they work good - the wheel builder I used(lucky spoke, austin) used them for himself and didn't have anything bad to say about them.
I say mine are the old because BHS has gone to the convertible ones now...mine are 15mm up front and 142mmx12mm out back.
I think the DT240s are a step up though.  My initial impression, is that DT350s are closer to BHS hubs.
I had mine built with 32 hole Crest's and cx laser spokes - came out a around 1520g for the set.  Should be fairly stable with 32 spokes even though it is lightweight rims.

Sitar, you should read this thread:
http://forums.mtbr.com/wheels-tires/most-affordable-high-engagement-hubs-914186.html
It starts out about replacing some DT but seems to get hijacked by those with BHS hubs.
It has quite a bit in it on page 2.
Also, interesting in that the newer offering by BHS has a higher poe of 54 vs. 48 on the ones I have.
Actually has interesting about DT 350/240 in that you can get a 54 poe ring from Trek dealers for DT.

Thanks for the link BR.. Interesting. It seems the BHS hubs are fairly well regarded.

I was kinda thinking the BHS hubs would be on the same level as the 350s, or at least close to them.. and they are quite a bit cheaper. Honestly, the 240s are a bit out of my price range.. but I'm okay with the price point of the 350s. Don't mind paying a it more to get the DT Swiss hubs over the BHS hubs if they're worth it. But if they're about the same, I guess BHS will do. That said, the fact that I would have to order the BHS hubs separately and pay to have them shipped to Iplay, where the DT Swiss 530 hubs are carried by Iplay means that the price difference would probably be very negligible.

alternately, you could have the rims shipped to you and have a local wheel builder do the build.
BHS pointed me to a local builder - 40.00 a wheel
What is  iPlay charging for hubs?  You can't go wrong with the 350's
At 240s level, I would start investigating CKs or Hadley or Tune.

People go a bit overboard with points of engagement, I understand there can be a need on technical rocky trails, but don't see any advantage for XC/Single track trails that I ride.  I've never been riding and thought, if I just had more POE I'd be able to do this or that.

More POE also means a wheel that does not spin as easily, more noise = more energy lost every time those pawls snap to the next engagement point.  I'd rather have a wheel that spins with less drag, than one that makes more noise.  I think people want more POE just because they like the sound, it's kinda the same reason people put noisy exhaust on their cars, they just like to make noise.

I've never damaged or wore out a hub components so I suppose my riding is not rough on bearings & other hub components as other people are.  However, I would always go with a quality hub that uses quality materials and tight tolerances.  I would expect that most of the popular brands like Novatec, Bitex, HopePro, and DT Swiss all do a decent job of providing a reliable product.

This may be a negative for the DT350's(see below) not sure if the BHS hubs or novatecs are stainless enduro bearings.

The 350 rear hub shares many similarities with the 240/340/440 family, unfortunately it does not share the stainless steel enduro bearings or the rubber seal on the drive side end cap so if you ride in a wet climate or wash the bike often the bearing go bad pretty quickly.

Bearings are relatively cheap, just match up the size of what you need and install an aftermarket set if needed.

Does anyone know the POE of the BHS hub vs. DT Swiss 350?

dt 350 18poe vs 54poe BHS
You can upgrade the DT to 36 POE or 54 POE for an upcharge.
Also, not confirmed, but if you are a clyde, there has been speculation that the teeth are too small to support larger users...in reference to 36 or 54

True, I've read some opinions that 36 is ok but 54 is overkill ;)

Anyone else know differences between these two hubs?  A friend of mine created a bike shop and I'm wanting to support him but he is quoting me on all DT Swiss stuff.  I'm thinking of asking him to do the BHS MTB270/MTB180 hubs instead.

sound

To look at them head to head BHS vs. DT350
generally on same level -
dt350 cost roughly twice as much
lower poe for dt350 - does it matter, to some yes, but look at us, we are buying/building bikes that are way overkill for what most are riding.
bearings probably on same quality level
sound
name brand vs. no name
BHS hubs are convertible - dt350 are dedicated from what I found.

If I were to do it again, I would get a bhs rear hub and some light/lighter weight front hub - cost coming up to a pair of dt350s

I ended up having my friend build the wheels at his shop but went with the BHS hubs:

BHS F/R hubs (32 hole)
DT Swiss Competition Race spokes
DT Swiss brass locking nipples
Stans Crest rims (tubeless)

I'll post the weight once they are built.

Anyone have issues with Sapim Laser or DT Swiss Revolution spokes?  Anthony at BHS mentioned that Sapim doesn't recommend their Laser spokes with disk brakes...
